Marvel’s Marvel and DC

***Following is the list of Marvel and DC movies I wouldn’t miss after COVID-19 is over.

Suicide Squad 2: Suicide Squad is one of the most underrated superhero or rather the supervillain movies of all-time, and it has always deserved to be considered a classic. It was strange that it wasn’t that big a hit, and people were not intelligent or creative enough to immerse themselves in the beauty of that flick. Now, with the second part of this movie coming up for release, one can be sure that the aesthetic beauty on the screen can only get better, and there is the certainty of those anti-heroes whom we are going to love more than anything else. There is nothing better to watch than Margot Robbie as the psychotic Harley Quinn. Then we have John Cena here too, and we know that this is going to be big. We will still miss Cara Delevingne as the Enchantress.

Morbius: Jared Leto who was the Joker in Suicide Squad is now Morbius, the man who gains the superhuman abilities with a thirst of blood to go with it, making him a vampire hero with a dark side. This one can make one fine anti-hero movie which can go through the same seriously, without having the dumb side like Deadpool did. These are the times when vampires have the advantage over others, and with the releasing date shifting to 2021 from 2020, this one can be the lesser known superhero making it big after COVID-19. Yet, the thing about vampires is that you have to make it good, and there is the change that some unnecessary elements can come in, like we had seen in Twilight and its sequels. If done well, this one from Marvel can be one fantastic work with this man in the lead.

Black Widow and Doctor Strange 2: Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff is one of the best female superheroes, and is clearly a step ahead of the overpowered superheroes like Captain Marvel. The same more or less reminds us of Batman who also thrives so well without the superpowers. A movie focusing completely on Black Widow was something much needed. At the same time, Doctor Strange is one character that goes beyond all superheroes, having a special place among the Avengers. He has also required a sequel, and with the sequel to Black Panther not really seeming to be a reality during these days, it is the sorcerer who can keep this franchise more interesting – no more Captain America and Iron Man demands that for most of the fans.

Eternals and The New Mutants: The tale of these creatures from outer space living on Earth and trying to defend them makes us interested in Eternals. To add to the same, most of us don’t have any idea about what the film is about, as they are not the usual superheroes whom we know about. The New Mutants is supposed to have released already, but the movie didn’t reach here as our theatres are still closed – it is a really a disappointing thing because a lot of people would have wanted to watch it on the big screen when COVID-19 was over. All those powers coming together would have been a treat on the big screen in 3D, but we will miss that. Even though the rating are not that great, we know that our audience have appreciated certain movies better than the North American movies.

Thor 4: Among the Avengers, there is no superhero who can have so many tales like Thor, as Asgard and the other worlds have so many things in store for sure. Thor: Ragnarok might have been the best the superhero movie featuring one hero from Marvel, just like Aquaman can boast of having a similar status from DC, as far as the last few years are concerned. With the turn of events happening related to these superheroes, there can be some interesting events related to this particular immortal. We can also be certain about the fact that we will have more visual splendour in store here. After all, the world is not the same after what Thanos did, and Asgard has also changed its place. Even the hammer has made way for the axe, and you know that innovation is to come up here.

Venom 2: The present version of Venom is actually better than Spider-Man, when we have a closer look at the characters, their quality and maturity. As the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the date of this one’s release to 2021 too, we can’t wait to see the next symbiotic human, Carnage, unleashing himself against Venom. It is always good to have an anti-hero who is not foolish and ridiculous as Deadpool. And in working with that role, Venom is a successful work. Unless we have more mutants from X-Men becoming anti-heroes in their own style, Venom will remain Marvel’s classic anti-hero, with further additions in this version which could connect nicely to other superhero tales from Marvel.

The Flash and Wonder Woman 84: The two movies from DC are of much interest, as the latter has us waiting for Cheetah, a lady villain suitable for Wonder Woman. We can only hope that the character as well as the costume provides what we need to see on the screen. Meanwhile, The Flash has always required a movie, and with that speed, one needs to see what all can be done, different from the limited idea which we had in the television series. As one feels that Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman have been stealing the show a little too much, and only Aquaman has stood in the way against the same, we need the fastest human on Earth to make an impact.

Looking Forward to 2017

Here are six movies which I am looking forward to watch in the year 2017. Even though it is overrated just because Deepika Padukone is acting in it, xXx: Return of Xander Cage was not a movie that I was looking forward to watch – such hyped movies and overrated actresses don’t make one interested, as far as I am concerned. I have to say the same about The Lego Batman Movie, as this kind of animation is not favoured at all. I have also included only the Hollywood movies in this list.

1. Split :: After coming back to form with the interesting flick which was The Visit, Manoj Night Shyamalan brings another psychological horror movie here. With a gifted actress like Anya Taylor-Joy who has already proved herself with The Witch and Morgan, and also with James McAvoy as the main character, there will be something about this flick, that is for sure. I see that this one has already released in the United States and a number of other territories, but here it was late on February 24th, but I was busy for that weekend. Who doesn’t want a psychological horror thriller at a time when life needs a boost?

2. Alien: Covenant :: I have always been fascinated with this idea which has been going on since the first movie from Ridley Scott had my attention. The second movie of the Alien prequel series and the sequel to Prometheus is certain to have our attention like the many other movies of the same franchise. Michael Fassbender is still there in this franchise, and it will carry on with the story from where it stopped in the previous movie – well, the predecessor is one of my favourite movies in outer space, and I am sure that this one will get somewhere there too. I am cent percent sure about this movie’s effectiveness.

3. Justice League :: Well, this one was always coming and we only needed to wait for the same, as DC needed to give the reply to Marvel’s Avengers, and we will see all of them together here – Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg – they are all here, and let us see how much of a grand effect they create here compared to the team lead by Captain America and Iron Man – also we can see how much of a destruction they are going to create as the threat from Steppenwolf and the Parademons are what will come upon the world in this flick.

4. Thor: Ragnarok :: There is no ending for the need of more superhero movies from Marvel, especially when it is about someone who is part of the Avengers. Ragnarok is a concept which is very interesting too, and with the god with the hammer having to battle the Incredible Hulk, and with the need to stop this event from happening, there is the certainty of something huge coming on the big screen. So, let’s be ready for this, and have the superhero in us prepared to take the tickets early. We are not really that far from the Norse gods these days, are we?

5. Wonder Woman :: She is the one lady superhero that we all want to watch again and again. The truth is that most of us never really had that much of a life full of DC or Marvel Comics here, and so she didn’t come to the main scene much. It was all Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, He Man – at those times. But with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, things have changed, and we are once again looking forward to seeing her on the big screen, and Gal Gadot is one actress who can certainly make this thing work. It is a world of superheroes, and let this one to the whole big list nicely.

6. Spider-Man: Homecoming :: Well, the Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War was a very much irritating one, and I surely miss The Amazing Spider-Man which was a nice franchise with two very good movies. But as they have decided to come up with a second reboot, a very much unnecessary one, I would surely need to watch this one and see how this one goes. I am sure that a movie about Spider-Man will have something for all of us, as it was how things have been working so far. Lets give a chance to Marvel to work on the upcoming plans for Avengers then. After all, Spidey is a favourite in India compared to everyone else.

Of Ants and Heroes

I watched Marvel’s latest Ant-Man on the first day first show of its release in India. Despite the highly positive opinions that it managed from the critics in North America as well as the United States audience, it seems to create a lesser impact here. There were only seven people to watch that movie when I watched it here and most of them actually arrived late. It is quite unusual for a superhero movie, and I would say that it never really came close to be accepted as a superhero movie here. Only those posters featuring Iron Man Armour, Thor’s Hammer and Captain America’s Shield seems to have created any interest among the common people.

ant-man!

Ant-Man will have a big struggle here. It seems that the movie is going to be changed right after the weekend or reduced to just a show as far as the common theatres are concerned. It will run better at the multiplexes, but even there, Minions, Inside Out and Baahubali have managed to score over this one. Here, I am going with the general audience, and I would say that it is not even close to being one of the top movies from Marvel, and it is a superhero who is not really there being the right part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I am going to share my favourites from Marvel on this occasion.

5. Thor (2011)
The man or rather the immortal with the hammer always had immense possibilities. With Thor: Ragnarok coming up in 2017, one has to remember that the franchise has been using the possibilities very well. The combination of myths and futuristic technology has worked really well for this one, and the speciality of the first movie is that it is more emotionally effective, and has a strong message. Along with talking about the worth attained by sacrifice, and with the assertion that where one is born is not the final decision maker, Thor makes an interesting point which is very much valid in a place where too many things are hereditary and reservations are based on caste and religion. Then there is Natalie Portman, and her presence makes it work even better, and you know what Loki can do.

4. Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Developing further from its predecessor, Thor: The Dark World is just a little ahead of the first movie featuring another version of the Norse God. Malekith the Accursed and his Dark Elves are a fantastic group of villains who mix dark magic and technology in such a way that they create a huge impact. Loki remains a favourite character, and the final battle is a treat to watch, just like the darker parts of the world. Visually more stunning than its predecessor, what this world comes with is a good mixture of things. Thor movies always have a special feeling, as it is so close to the myths. This one has already made sure that there will be something bigger in store for the third movie of the series, especially if you think about the meaning of the title there – it is something to watch out for.

thordarkworld

3. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Successfully establishing its ideological power, Captain America: The First Avenger thrives on its messages of sacrifice and duty. This movie made Captain America my favourite Avenger and also the most interesting character from Marvel. The characterization of Captain America takes the hero model to another level and makes all other superheroes just too selfish and not ready to make the right stand. From the extremities of weaknesses, Captain America is established and this selection is based on goodness and morality rather than anything else. It also makes sure that he remains more humane than any other superhero. Well, he might be the most impossible character. Red Skull is an interesting villain here too.

2. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
The fans of the original Avengers couldn’t really take this one as this was smarter. It is the only reason why this had less collection at box-office, but still there this one did collect huge. Even the critics have the first movie more, but that is more because they were too addicted to the predecessor that they couldn’t come out of it and also failed to understand Age of Ultron which had a much better idea, message and action sequences. The addition of two new superheroes was actually a very nice boost here, and Scarlet Witch is always a joy to watch. This movie actually has more than what instantly meets the eye, and it deserved to be the top grossing movie of the year, but strange nostalgia got Jurassic World to a higher level and emotions made Fast and Furious 7 bigger than what it really is.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Among the movies from Marvel, I consider this to be the most brilliant one. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is not just a superhero movie, but a thriller with some fine ideological support. The plot is smart and intelligent, and the presence of a brain never really hurts even though visuals are those most cared about in the superhero movies. Well, Captain America has always been more of a supersoldier than a superhero, and so this nicely develops into an interesting plot. There is also that seriousness maintained, which Ant-Man could never manage, and unlike the way Iron Man series has been going, this one doesn’t go the predictable or repetitive way either. An intelligent superhero will only do good to the franchise.

Twilight of the Gods

As a part of the Norse Mythology, this twilight which is more known as Ragnarok includes a number of future events including the death of major gods including Thor, Loki and Odin – not really a happy chain of events for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There will be a great battle between good and evil, and in the end, a new world will arrive. This is not something that is uncommon among most of the religions of the world too, and it should work as if it is a well known thing.

A part of many Scandinavian works including Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, this twilight is something that is expected to come sooner or later. There are things that speeds up such events, bringing more need to such events. Scandinavian mythology might not be interesting for everyone, but these events, in its full strength, cannot be ignored as humans are striving towards going towards that end. After all, almost everyone loves Thor and Loki, thanks to what Marvel has brought to the cinema.

A future Ragnarok in a modern city of chaos and destruction.

A future Ragnarok in a modern city of chaos and destruction.

Yes, we are speeding up the wheel of time as if it is our private property, which means that our time will be limited. We have been infecting our world with matters which are not needed, and taking ourselves down from the better state we have achieved through centuries of knowledge and wisdom brought to us by great people. We are coming down from our respected status, and there are things that contribute to the same, most important of them being a certain amount of uncontrollable lust, which leads to pre-marital sex.

The new generation thinks that it is just too cool, and it has lead to Bollywood also supporting the same. Well, Bollywood has been acting out of its mind for years now, looking only to find ways to make money. They always keep finding new lows to achieve in film making. The question remains about what the new generation attitude achieves. There is no such thing as being “cool”, and it is just part of the many freaky things that the new generation has come up with. We can be pretty sure that they will come up with more, but pre-marital sex surely is not even worthy enough to be categorized into the “cool” category.

Rangarok: you can't stop it, but may be the event can be delayed.

Rangarok: you can’t stop it, but may be the event can be delayed.

The end of the world is just a situation which is waiting to arrive in more than one form. It can be initiated in many ways, and one of them is our loss of morality, and the most saddening thing is that India, with its rich and respectable culture and traditions is losing it. When we think that it is the same thing that has lead to the Western civilization losing its power, I would say that it is an alarming situation, as India has stayed there in between all this development, holding on to its traditions and values. It was something that gained respect, even as some people won’t accept it.

May be the events like Kiss of Love happens to be one step towards this Ragnarok, as something emotional is brought to the camera like porn. Even as there are some good intentions behind it, one has to feel that the end results of that movement is not going to be positive. Can’t they go and kiss the orphan children and the parents abandoned by their sons and daughters? Wouldn’t that be a better Kiss of Love? What we need to hold on to, is our traditions more than anything else. No, I am not supporting any political wing in this case, but it is what can help us thrive; otherwise there is not much difference between humans and animals, as people keep asking for more and more freedom everyday to go outside morality.

This blog post was written as part of the contest at Indiblogger in association with Poonaam Uppal’s True Love – A Mystical True Love Story, a book I am longing to read myself. The question was about Yes or No to Pre-Marital Sex, and the answer, as you can see here clearly, is a big no. May there be wisdom among the youth of India, and let humanity prevail with goodness and true love instead of just lust and infatuation. *The images used in this blog are from Constantine’s and Ragnarok’s wikipedia pages and the official Facebook page of Poonaam Uppal (https://www.facebook.com/LoveDivaPoonaam) respectively. I suggest you check her book on True Love too.
