Water: Of Eternal Significance

Water has made sure that life thrived in the least expected places, and it has contributed to the growth of civilizations in the past. The greatest civilizations and empires began on the banks of one river or the other. Water has been the one thing which made sure that life became better. We have learned about how significant the rivers of Indus, Nile, Tiber, Huang He, Tigris and Euphrates have been in the history of civilizations and empires. Even those towns and cities on the banks of rivers developed quicker while the others could only follow as fast as they could. There is the tale of Hagar who found water in the desert, and there was hope against despair in wilderness, after which a great nation was born of him.

Well, water was available more during the last century, as we look back to our childhood. The temperature was also lower at those times, and our rivers carried more water, never really becoming so dry as we see them now. During those days, water was taken for granted. When it is all around you and freely available, you don’t think about it. Even if it is not that clean, you will feel that it is enough. Then, demanding to save water would have felt like a strange demand, especially in Kerala which always had a wide network of rivers and plenty of rainfall. At that period of time, it was like, have enough water, and get on with life. But it is not so any more.

The beauty of the waterworld of Kerala is no surprise to travelers.

The total amount of rainfall has decreased, and the climate has become rather unpredictable. During these times, especially during these months of high temperature, situation is only getting worse. We are used to having enough water every year, and therefore, we are not thinking much about it, even when we see the signs. But it is already late, and it is up to us to do something about it. We can do what we can, in our own small ways, and the preservation of water would depend on what each of us can contribute in whichever ways possible. As we hear that the next wars would be fought in the name of water, let us do something for our future generation to have better life.

There are a few simple things that we can do. They begin at home, from using the shower only according to the need, to making sure that there is no water leakage. There will be opportunities to close an open tap at different places. We just shouldn’t use water when there is no need. We can make sure that a few drops of water doesn’t keep coming down from a tap which is not completely closed. We don’t need to keep a tap open, and there is no need to care so much about the cleanliness of a car or bike during this very hot summer season. If there are things that we can avoid, and are not necessity, we can keep them to be done at a time when the monsoon are here, and the showers are strong.

So, can we make sure that the beauty of waterworld stay?

As most of you might have already though about, the future is in our hands, and the Earth itself depends on us, as a thinking sentient life form who can make a difference. Water is more of less the elixir of life and the fountain of youth, which will keep the humans as well as the other life forms go on strong. Some of us might still think that there will be enough what for the next few generations, and a high level scarcity of the liquid will not happen during the time of their children or grand children – but they are wrong. The environment itself keeps proving us wrong, and with deforestation and other crimes against nature, an extinction event itself is not that far away.

There are two options with dealing with this water scarcity leading to a possible third world war for water followed by human extinction. The first option is to get on with our lives as if nothing is going to happen because droughts are normal and has happened through centuries – there is nothing new that needs our attention. The second option is to think deeply about this problem of water shortage, and decide that you need to make a move; you have to make stand to save water. Beginning from home, extending to your village, town or city and then further, it is your stance that matter, for it becomes your duty to protect the special resource of water – save water or the next generation will find you responsible for their plight.

Think about the people who are struggling to find a source of clean water. The news about water scarcity in Vypin and other islands of Cochin reminds us about the same; it has been a problem which has been going on for years. There are people who need water right between us. We just need to open our eyes and have a look. It is the sight that the movie Paippin Chuvattile Pranayam reminded us about, last year. We see them, and we know how important water is, and how much need is there to preserve it. The water that we use more than we need is a clear case of wastage, and let us not fall into doing such evil. Let us remember that we have the responsibility, not just to our people, but also to a better future. It calls for #CuttingPaani.

I have signed Livpure’s #CuttingPaani petition at https://www.change.org/p/cuttingpaani. Please choose to sign the petition, save water, and save our world for the future!

Some Fun with Studies

English in India has never felt more necessary than that last few years. Even though the regional languages are also having their influence with the support of state governments, coming up with new ways to promote them, trying to make sure that they are doing well, English has been increasing its hold on the students as well as the parents. Hindi also has its say, but it is English that is having an even bigger say in the nation as a whole at one point or the other, as it is having all around the world. With an influence that only gets better, learning the basics of English has been a need, more than a desire these days.

It is here that Nihar Naturals Shanti Amla comes to the picture with its Pathshala Funwala initiative that provides the option of good and smarter education everywhere, making it more accessible, and without discrimination, also possessing a special charm. It is more than just a need during these times, especially in those remote places far away from those cities and towns. But it is not just that, which Pathshala Funwala makes sure about, as they provide a unique toll free number, 8055667788 to help children who have no chance, but really wishes to learn English language.

A long time ago, when I was a child, I wasn’t that good at English either. My interest in the subject came only in the later high school, when I had a good teacher, Miss. Aleyamma Varghese, who happens to be one of the best teachers I ever had – she also went on to become the headmistress of the school later. Your desire to learn a language, especially a language which is not spoken widely among your people, only comes to us when we have good teachers, and Nihar Shanti Amla’s Pathshala Funwala’s toll free number becomes the right teacher, giving children the tips.

Yes, you can have the child sit in a classroom if there is such an option available. But you can be certain that this option could be rather better. Children want some fun to go with learning, and if the studies can connect with them really well, it will feel simple and a lot interesting. It is one way to make sure that they don’t forget the lessons that easily – during our times, they had the rod, they made us stand outside the classroom, they came up with those impositions which increased in number and they even asked us to bring our parents, especially father to meet the class teacher; but those times were different.

I know a number of people who make the excuses for not learning English, as their learning process was just too boring and forced upon them – never did they want to learn the language because they didn’t need to, and never really had to speak in English. Right after they get out of the school or college, they just let the language, along with its literature vanish into thin air. There is the exception of having Hollywood movies which you will feel the need to watch, but most of the movies are about visual extravaganze – at least those which gets wide release in India belong to that category and got less to contribute to the language.

Well, English is a lot of fun. Sooner or later, more and more people will realize that and work accordingly. So, it is up-to all children, including that child you know, who is not getting access to good English education, or even education as a whole, to get back to the track. It is a fast moving world, and we don’t want any child to be falling behind because he or she, or the father or mother never really knew that there was another option. We need them to know, and we need them to move forward, and not sink in the muddy place which is always there to take people in there instead of letting them fly.

The Tea Cerebration(s) recommend you to share this special service to the needy ones who can get the best out of this simple and fun way of learning the language. It is for us to be part of a change, which could make a difference in our world. When you can make a cause work, it is something that adds to your list of virtuous deeds rather than to that resume which you send to make a few thousands of money every month. In making the world around us better, starting with the children, we have the right thing to do for a group of future citizens who are capable of more than they seem to be. So, do keep the number in mind – 8055667788

The Eye of Cyclops

In the Chambers of the Elder Vampires, Vampire Bat and Vampire Owl has a discussion. It wasn’t about the wars this time, but it was not a case of peace either. The chambers were listening to a different conversation. It was about the effects of the love at first sight which Vampire Owl had felt for Lady Death.

Vampire Bat: Are you sure you want to do this? Do you think that this is the right decision at this point?

Vampire Owl: Yes, I would do this for Lady Death as you would do that for her evil twin sister.

Vampire Bat: I haven’t really decided about myself. I am sure that I won’t be asked about such strange conditions in love.

Vampire Owl: You don’t understand. This is love at first sight. There is nothing ordinary about it, and instead here we have it as a thing of highest quality.

transyl (2)

Vampire Bat: What do you mean by that? Where did you actually see her? You haven’t met Death yet.

Vampire Owl: It is kind of correct in your simple and lifeless terms, considering the fact that you are a layman in love. I am of the standard of a bishop if love is considered a religion.

Vampire Bat: It is indeed a relief that you didn’t say Pope, Lama or Patriarch. Love is not a religion even though people say that their religion is love or God is love; your love with Lady Death is surely not that. You can ask Uncle Dracula for confirmation.

Vampire Owl: This is why you should read books about love from the Imperial Vampire Library. It is about sensing her presence and making an impression. Sight is just a word which translates into sense in after-life.

Vampire Bat: You mean to say that your dearest Lady Death is blind and can only sense your presence.

Vampire Owl: Silly layman. You should be ordained into the guild of love, or you will never find Lady Death’s evil twin sister. This is why you don’t even know her name yet.

Vampire Bat: Actually, none of these is the problem. Your mission is injurious to your health. I can give you a clear warning on that. I can even get certification about the same from our analysts.

Vampire Owl: I am very good at missions. I have accomplished so much in my career with one mission after another.

Vampire Bat: Yes, but not related to returning with an eye of a cyclops. You will be going through hostile territory. To add to that, there are two problems related to the same. One is that you don’t know if the creature exists. The second is that if they do, a cyclops got only one eye and if you take it you are going to make it very angry.

Vampire Owl: There is this area north of the Dark Elf Terrain and west of the Blood Merchant Ports. I will have to go through the Graves of the Undead, but I have a bag of bones and it will be okay to make a passage. The area is called Horn of Cyclops. I will find the creatures there. When I do, it won’t matter if they are angry, happy or depressed.

Vampire Bat: You are not even going to make it through the Free Zombie Territory. Do you know that a mythical cyclops is not supposed to have a horn, and the name could be just because the area is shaped like that? The place is ruled by tribal chieftains. You are going to be caught in the middle of nowhere.

Vampire Owl: May be. But it is love at first sight, or sense. I have to give it a try. This is one of those things to do in order to meet Lady Death; she appears in case of victory and we can get to her in case of a defeat which is death.

transyl (1)

Vampire Bat: Of what use is a dead Vampire Owl even to love? And most of all, what is the use to Uncle Dracula? You are not even going to be reborn again as a zombie if you die in the North.

Vampire Owl: You cannot stop my destiny with such strange words. My determination is bigger than all that.

Vampire Bat: You should still inform Uncle Dracula about the same and find the right moment.

Vampire Owl: I shall be doing the same. I will appoint Vampire Alligator in my place when I am not here.

Vampire Bat: But Vampire Crocodile is the third in command and the fourth most experienced person of the team.

Vampire Owl: Yes, but he and his stories of Lake Placid have been getting into my nerves. I am giving punishment transfer for him to the borders around the Werewolf Kingdom.

Vampire Bat: Not a fair decision as usual! I suggest you go through the sea then, around the Old Vampire Isle.

Vampire Owl: I shall give it some thought. The first thing to do is to say good bye to Uncle Dracula and make sure that he agrees to my points enough to grant me leave.

Vampire Bat: So be it then! So much for what follows the love at first sight, sense or whatever.

[The chambers were back to sensing the silence with no vampire presence].

Hypocrites at Home

When someone say #ShareTheLoad, there will always be people who try to make use of the situation just to claim to have done so and show themselves to the others as bloody righteous people, but in reality, they are not doing any favours at home and are only making things worse. So never judge a family and its members by the cover, because sharing is something which should come from the heart and not for showing off.

Our nation has its own share of hypocrites who have that kind of attitude towards their wife and children, and let me assure you that I have known too many of them. They are too much worried about what the society thinks about them and keeps on pretending that they are great family men, always helping the lady when someone else has come to the house. The interest in cooking and washing just reaches a new high when someone else is at home.

#ShareTheLoad – it comes to them when someone from outside the family is looking. They also make great speeches about how women should be treated so well and why one needs to be part of the household work. It will be that kind of a speech which makes the guest feel that the lady is lucky to have this special gentleman as a husband. But no, it is just about words, and it is available without much work, and acting comes naturally to some people who deserve the Oscars of life.

Ariel hopes for you to share the load, as you can see 🙂

There are men who don’t help their wives at all with absolutely no share, some others who do help, and the last category is the most disgusting of them all – the hypocrites who wants to make everyone believe that they do, and makes an impression of a Holy Family which lives in that house. They might continue to do so as they can, but the truth is that they can’t fool everyone all the time, and sooner or later karma is going to get to them and deliver the much needed poetic justice.

One has to wonder why some people have to pretend to be what they are not. It is clear that they have no respect or care for the other family members. Well, they can continue to say that it is not their department, and still claim to do so in front of others. It is their department; actually it is the department of everyone in the house and there comes a responsibility towards making a home and it is not done by one person who do so much work when another person spends all the time in leisure.

It is not enough that they are completely useless at home and wanders around being unworthy of running a family, that they return to trouble those who do the work correctly. They even claim that the work is not done properly, but in their mind, knows that they can’t do it even in a half-good manner. Yes, they say that it is not their department, but they should try to claim some place in that department too, because home should be where the heart should be! The house is the department of everyone, even the pet cats thinks so!

Those who can’t do that will be better people if not married. They become terrible examples to people around them as well as the new generation. It is simple – if they can’t do the family any good, they shouldn’t be married. This is also applicable to those who only listens to their brothers and sisters. Better be a selfish loner or a hypocrite who lives alone rather than become someone who is a curse to the home. One won’t have claims for making a better home if all that the person can do is to bring troubles and think only about one’s own life! Don’t be a hypocrite or selfish brute, just #ShareTheLoad

Hero of the Missed Call

He had absolutely no idea why he had to do that. They said that he was selected by fate to be the hero and had to do this so that the government will learn a lesson about what happens when the demands of the leading extremist faction is rejected. They wanted a new nation out of the middle part of the existing country and they said that it was the right demand and it was also the perfect result for the people. Yes, questioning wasn’t natural for them.

“Do I really have to do that?” he asked as he chatted through Skype on his mobile.

“Yes, you have to, and you are the one selected to do that. There will be no change of plans. We always stick to what we decide together. You need to make a discovery of your faith in us and go on. You are going to be a great hero” answered the man wearing the black mask.

“But it is too extreme even for the extremist standards. So many people will die and it will be recorded in history an act of extreme cruelty” he hesitated and added.

“They have only themselves to blame. You know what all plans they have been making. We are going to be declared a terrorist faction soon. Do you know what they call me? The Black Mask. Seriously? Who do they think they are? We are just a peaceful extremist group who wants to stop people from enjoying their unnecessary freedom. We just hope to stop them from eating, drinking and wearing what they want. We even work as moral police part-time” said the Black Mask.

DSC08894

“Yes, it is a terrible name. It is like that of a comic book character. You should be called something more stylish and revolutionary so that when they make statues of you with a covered face, everyone will recognize you” he said.

“You are beginning to become some pain. Forget that. We are going to act against the government’s foolishness, and let them know that we have weapons and are ready to break away from them in any way possible. We will create this new republic out of the blood and scattered body parts of their people” the Black Mask didn’t forget to add extra power here by punching the table.

“But we are one nation as of now. Their people is our people. We are one nation as we know it and this would only mean that we killed our countrymen” he said while hoping for something better.

“Yes, but we get the votes only by spreading hatred. An act of violence is a boost to that hatred and will accelerate our demands. This nation has no more scope for our extremism. So we will start a new nation and it will be based on our ideas only with us as the single ruling party” the Black Mask continued.

“We can still win the elections. Can I make the explosion somewhere else, may be at a place where nobody is around so that it can go off as a warning?” he pleaded.

“You know what you need to do. As I said, you need to discover your faith in us. This discovery will only be made if you adhere to our principles. You need to obey. You need to make one missed call to the mall where we have kept the explosives from the distance which I have mentioned. It will trigger the explosives there. You will be our hero and this is you last chance” yelled the Black Mask.

Photo0096

“Well, do you know that a quarter of the explosives are left behind at your home on the left of where I am standing now?” he asked.

“Wait! What? Why are you here? You are not supposed to be here. You should be blasting that mall and bringing us glory” the scared Black Mask moved away from the window.

“I am here to say farewell, and wishing you best of luck in hell. Good luck with your discovery between the flames and by the side of the Devil” he shouted.

He walked back after pressing the button, happier than ever. He was never this happy to have broken the trust of someone, and this was completely worth it. The explosion behind him never really caught his attention because he wondered what was to happen next. He wondered how good spirituality will turn out to be in this age. He had actually begun his discovery.

“I guess I am still a hero; the hero of the missed call.” he murmured.

In the Waiting Room

The Vampire Bat and The Vampire Owl waited at the Old Castle Tower which faced the Bloody Waters Bay. They watched as a number of smaller ships joined the Great Vampire Armada from distant lands, and riders on dark horses arrived from the other side which formed a long path. It was transformed into the unofficial vampire waiting room. They waited and waited, and they did nothing else.

Vampire Owl: I have waited for so long. There might be no hope. Vampire Crocodile would have decided to quit very long ago.

Vampire Bat: May be we can wait a little longer. This old castle tower is abandoned anyway and we have no other job.

Vampire Owl: But she was supposed to come much earlier. This has been like an eternity.

Vampire Bat: She has to come all the way from those distant lands. We have to wait as much as we can.

Vampire Owl: I see horses approaching with black banners. Is it her?

Vampire Bat: I think that it is a funeral procession. It should be for the vampire who took a bullet or two in the name of love for that high elf girl, but forgot that it was made of silver and dipped in garlic.

Vampire Owl: There are strange things that people do for the ladies when in love, I see. Yet, we are actually doing nothing by sitting here.

cstl (1)

Vampire Owl: There is nothing to be done in this world.

Vampire Bat: Which is why we are waiting here to change our lives forever.

Uncle Dracula: There is no use in waiting. She is not going to come; not today and not tomorrow or day after tomorrow.

Vampire Owl: He is so pessimistic. Why is he talking like that and sending us to the void of perpetual depression?

Uncle Dracula: How is hoping for Lady Death to come, a case of optimism? Death has nothing optimistic about it. I don’t see any joy in the same. There is no glory in suicide if you are thinking about one. You have been marked by the shadows, and won’t have a good time in the other world.

Vampire Bat: But we are in love with Lady Death and her evil twin with long curly hair and bad teeth.

Uncle Dracula: Love? Is it what you people call it? You have been bored with life so much that you hope for death, and you sit here after reading the poems of Emily Dickinson. Get out there, have a Blood Milk Shake and get back to work.

Vampire Owl: But true love is beyond life and death. It is like a bridge between the two worlds. So many poets have talked about it. Even the great vampire court poet who was eaten by those zombies.

Uncle Dracula: Yes, but none of them were talking about you, which is why they are world famous poets now. Do you think that this melodrama is cool? It is not. We have work to do. There is a bloody vampire empire to run. There is hatred and there is chaos all around. There are wars and there is intolerance. In the middle of all these, we have to come up with a brighter example. And here, you are sitting at the top of the tower and personifying death as a lady. Let me tell you what I am going to do. I will put you both on the vampire matrimony website.

cstl (2)

Vampire Bat: No, not the matrimonial website! It is evil even for the human standards!

Vampire Owl: Wait, there is a ship with black sails. Why is it so bloody slow? Even blood cargo ships are faster than that.

Uncle Dracula: It is the ghost ship that haunts the Spectre Peninsula. It is not of this world, but a reflection from the other dimension of the wrong which has happened years ago at the peninsula and has to be corrected in the long run. Death doesn’t own a ship anyway.

Vampire Bat: We should wait for Lady Death tomorrow then! It will be an even better day because it is a holiday.

Uncle Dracula: You work very less. So it doesn’t really matter.

Vampire Bat: Let’s go then and hope for a better tomorrow.

Vampire Owl: Yes, with lots of love for Lady Death and her evil twin sister.

Hoping for a Better Situation

There is no problem as big as the lack of toilets in India, and that too in the twenty first century. Even as such problems have been a lesser thing of horror in Kerala as I have felt during my travel throughout the state, it has been much more during my journeys through the less urban areas of the other states. There is no difficulty in knowing about the same either, as we can realize that just from the smell itself.

Considering the fact that the situation hasn’t got much better is really a cause of concern. We have gone through so many years after independence, and not much has changed as we can see. The progress that we have achieved is tremendous, but going to Mars and still not having toilets? What does that mean? There are serious health problems which can result due the same, and health is just one of the troubles – as we hope and believe that the new government will take good measure for the same, lets take the case of Babli.

The kitty warns you about the health hazards :D (taken on my GT-S7562)

The kitty warns you about the health hazards 😀 (taken on my GT-S7562)

It was early morning, and Babli got out of her room to the terrible smell of faeces. It was a cloudy morning and rain kept on pouring down like it has no other job to do. Babli’s area had not more than five toilets in total for the large number of people who lived around. She knew that India is one of the fastest developing nations in the world, and admired how much progress it had in the last few years – she had learnt about the same. But she wondered why there was no toilet for her.

It was worse when she had to go to school. She had to travel fifty five kilometres to reach the school in heavy traffic. It was near impossible to find a toilet on the way, and the boys always did it on the roadside, and she knew that it would have a terrible impact on her dignity if she would even think about the same. The time taken to travel that much distance was about three hours, and it was sometimes impossible to reach the school on time after waiting in the long queue for the toilet.

Babli knew that what she wanted was not a worship place; temples, churches and the rest of the places for God were not her concern. But the closest church had toilets and the temple also had a toilet for ladies in the premises, and due to the same, she had become closer to God. She never really prayed, but did hope for the abode of any God to appear so that she could relieve herself. She had decided that when she grow up, she would go to a restaurant and have some food there just to use the toilet there.

She knew that India was progressing, but isn’t a toilet part of progress? She wondered. May be she could write about it, but there was no point. She remembered the man who made a speech about it in the school. He had said that a clean toilet is the right of every Indian, and it is very essential for good health. Why was she deprived of her right? Why was he even without her privacy? She continued to ponder over the same. When she asked that man, he had said that there was nothing he could do.

How can we make the beautiful nature a toilet? (taken on my DSC-W310)

How can we make the beautiful nature a toilet? (taken on my DSC-W310)

This has been a problem for not just one Babli, but a lot of her friends who lived near her home and also those who came to the same school from different areas. Yes, each and every Babli in India needs a toilet, and it is a basic requirement that needs to be fulfilled before hoping for a lot of other things which arrive in the name of development. But what is the first step to development? It is time we start thinking about the same. Not malls, not multi-national companies, not high profile industries, but toilets for everyone. This is where Domex is doing a wonderful job with their initiative to bring toilets to as many villages as possible.

This is for the Happy Hours campaign at Indiblogger in association with Domex, a writing for “Toilet for Babli” which is part of “You Click Domex Contributes” initiative at http://www.domex.in/.
