The Changes of Life

Life changes, and it was always expected to happen. Even after a change, that particular changed situation is also going to change. It is not something that I wasn’t expecting, but it did come all of a sudden, and it is actually a good thing. One more year without change and I might have been rather too hesitant to change – I would have detested it and might have tried to prevent it in all ways possible. But not now, as this change is something that I wanted long ago, even before I started this blog.

People still say that if you take a degree in MA English Language and Literature, you have to write NET and even try for JRF, and it is the natural path right ahead of you. They say that you have to follow this path or not do justice to what you have studied, and most probably you won’t get another job at all. I know that most of my friends have done that and the rest have gone on to do BEd and made the choice to do SET instead – note the difference, but I consider it rather minute.

If you look in our class, you can find a maximum of one person who hasn’t gone after NET or SET, and not trying to become the college professor or school teacher – I have made it two in that case, and it is the divergence that I have always wanted; with the master divergent movie Charlie winning so many of the state film awards, you might want the same too. Society has that idea that teaching in school or college is the better choice, especially for women, because they can reach home earlier, and there might be even many free hours – I know a few who have pursued the same for this reason.

I have walked around a lot these days through my favourite bus station!

I have walked around a lot these days through my favourite bus station!

Well, the case of post graduation in English has been rather strange. It is like the least professional course around here; you are not really preferred for most of the jobs out there. The newspapers and magazines ask for a journalism degree, and so I am glad to be part of a publishing house right now; it was getting seemingly impossible to get a job. Most people don’t even reply when an MA English graduate send a resume; they just don’t seem to have that idea that we are just readers and nothing else.

It is the same reason why me getting this job has been very significant. It has been the result of a long wait, and it is the same reason why I have broken my writing streak on my blog. If you remember, I have been writing continuously from December 9th 2014 to February 3rd 2016 – I continued for a few days after joining work, but it was getting tough with my timing as I start around 6:30 AM and return home around 8:30 PM – that is just the average, as I have reached at 7:30 and 9:30.

I have really less time at home, and so I have reduced my blogging just before reaching 500 posts on this blog, as this one is the post number 496. As of now, it seems that the 500th special post won’t happen anytime soon. But it might change some day, as the journey is just about 40 km even though it is the kind of a journey that can take about two hours, thanks to the pot-holes, traffic problems, change of timing of buses and the metro as well as fly-over constructions which are going on.

I travel through the bus station where I have passed through the most!

I once again travel through the bus station where I have passed through the most!

I have surely managed to be more used to it though, even as it still ends with me getting so much tired. I spend my time on the bus listening to music or watching some movie or television series in English. Well, at least I will have something to write about what I watch and the long journey which should actually finish in 45 minutes, but extends to two or even three hours based on which bus I manage to catch, and how many of times I have to change that giant transport!

2016: The First Quarter

Another year comes to a close with more than half of December gone and buried under the memories. 2016 is going to be a big year for the movie fans as a lot of you might have already guessed. Yes, we have felt the same for other years too, but you can just look at the movies which are going to be released, and then think in detail about how good the year can be. They have the right to disappoint us too, but looking at it, there is the feeling of something huge coming up. The following movies are only the most anticipated movies from the first three months, and even that is a nice list. It is not prepared in a specific order.

The 5th Wave and The Boy: Here is another science fiction thriller which features an alien invasion. Based on the novel with the same name written by Rick Yancey, this one has Chloë Grace Moretz and aliens. The situation has already gone through four waves of alien attacks, and the fifth is just on the way. The world is in chaos, and people are caught in this destruction and mutual distrust, and extinction is already on the corner. The movie also has good line-up of well-known faces including Liev Schreiber, Maika Monroe and Maria Bello. Yes, this is part of a trilogy and the last book is going to arrive in 2016 which means that franchise will have the material early enough for all three flicks. Meanwhile, look out for The Boy, a supernatural horror movie with a doll at the centre of everything.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Kung Fu Panda 3: If you have watched the trailer of this movie, you will have the idea what to expect. This follow-up to Man of Steel has the two big superheroes of DC Comics fighting against each other as another threat arrives. There is also Wonder Woman whom we haven’t seen for quite a while on the big screen. Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash are also supposed to be there. I would love to see how Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman will turn out to be. As you might have already felt, the action is going to be huge, and there should be some interesting themes. About Kung Fu Panda 3, we will just watch it – no other description is needed; the franchise should keep its level at all times.

Gods of Egypt and London Has Fallen: Well, how often do we get to see movies based on Egyptian Mythology? Here is one for a change from the Greek. In this movie, the evil god, Set takes over Egypt, and it is up-to the mortal heroes allied with another god, Horus to save their world. Game of Thrones‘ own Jammie Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau plays the great god Horus, and Gerard Butler is the villain. We have all heard about the Eye of Horus, haven’t we? It does look kind of strange, but it is different, and so it should work. Meanwhile, London Has Fallen, the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen returns with another release date, after supposedly escaping competition with Ridley Scott’s The Martian at the earlier planned date – I already talked about it last year as the movie to look out for in 2015, and it will be an interesting watch when it finally releases.

Deadpool and The Divergent Series: Allegiant: I am not without doubts about Deadpool with the humour in the trailer which is rather too much. But we could do with a mutant, because it has been some time. Days of the Future Past still lingers in the mind, and lets see what this mutant superhero got for us. This one also has Morena Baccarin from Gotham television series? That brings more need here. The fun could be quite different here. Even a sequel for the movie is already under development. We will also have the third movie of the Divergent series, after Insurgent made a lesser impact than its predecessor. But from the material for this part of the franchise, this should be a lot better. Then there is Shailene Woodley whom we can’t resist as Beatrice Prior.

The Young Messiah: We have been waiting for a long time to have a vampire book from Anne Rice made into a movie. We had the amazingly good Interview with the Vampire which had Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas and Christian Slater; the movie which turned out to be so good that it could be better than the book, and there was The Vampire Lestat which was pretty much terrible. The Tale of the Body Thief was going to be made into a movie, but not much was heard about it after that. Well, we have one work of Anne Rice made into a movie, and it is not the vampire stuff this time. It is from her work Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, a fictional work which depicts the life of Jesus Christ at the age of seven to eight. It will be interesting to see what it brings.

The Witch and The Forest: Released at 2015 Sundance Film Festival and with 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 90% on Metacritic, The Witch is going to be something different, that is for sure. It should be a higher level horror movie, as the genre is not something usually loved by the critics. The movie takes the viewers to a seventeenth century Puritan family in New England, along the wilderness, and through the fears of witchcraft and creatures of the dark. The Forest is another supernatural thriller that we should be looking for. It has Natalie Dormer, Game of Thrones‘ own Margaery Tyrell in the lead, and is set in Japan – you are sure to meet some interesting souls here.

Divergence: A Crime?

This is a question which I should have asked much earlier, but there is no limit for the time required for realization, I would say. I had the opportunity to watch the movie Divergent based on Veronica Roth’s debut novel with the same name. Yes, Shailene Woodley is a dashing young actress playing Beatrice Prior, but that is not the central thing about it, even as nobody can deny the fact that it helped to make sure that the movie was not missed. The comparisons to Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games is also relevant, but I would rather get into the main points now.

The divergence of Tris: So Beatrice a.k.a Tris is a divergent, not able to be grouped into any of the factions of the post-apocalyptic Chicago because she doesn’t possess the attributes for them. She was different from the others, but if the others were to realize the same, she would have no future of her own. Each person had to blend in somewhere and go on working with the faction, and her ability to be different was a case of panic. The world was set, and everyone had to fit in. The divergents were to be feared by the government for their brilliance and those ideas which could change the system.

The present scenario: There is no real option to be a divergent in our world. There are people who start groups and try to make people agree to their new found rights or abuse people to get acceptance. No, I am not talking about any of them. I am talking about being different by one’s own, being someone else by thoughts and action and not joining just another group to become of a member of another team which itself ruins the idea of being divergent, further creating more and more divergence forming more factions.

A person can’t be grouped into a category. There is more than one skill that a person can exhibit and there is always more than one kind of thought that he or she can have. A person is beyond all divisions as an individual. He can’t act like someone else just because he is part of that society. You can’t expect a person to paint his house in the same colour just because someone else has that colour or most people choose that particular shade. You can’t tell someone to follow a behaviour, no people shouldn’t be predicted, as they are not playing game, they are living lives.

We have been plagued, almost all of us in this part of the world has been chosen to study Engineering or Medicine, and was there really a choice until the recession came up and suppressed the latter up-to an extent? Can people always conduct a marriage in a simple manner without showing the vanity and spend the rest of the money feeding the poor? Can we Catholics marry without taking that terrible compulsary pre-marital course which has absolutely no use for the life post-marital life as long as we can’t figure out love by ourselves? Do we need to stand on a stage, grinning for the video camera till the wedding function ends?

These should have been easy things to do, but considering the current scenario and the attitude of the people, I would think that it is more difficult than the crow flying upside down or having a beautiful world of goodness. Our chance at divergence is pretty low unless our parents give support or our relatives are that damn good. But usually there are no real choices, we either agree to get rid of our divergence or rather choose to live our life hiding it or taking it out to bring the omnipresence of the people around us.

Be prepared to fight for divergence (photo from Divergent FB Page)

Always be prepared to fight for divergence (photo from Divergent FB Page)

People will always ask what we are doing and why are we not doing a job. People will ask why we are not getting married. They are nice questions and thanks for asking. But we are divergents, and the elixir of divergence that runs through our veins might ask some question to you which you might not want to hear or answer. In Divergent, our heroine could see through the fake visages, and may be we will see through your questions and it certainly won’t do any good for you. So, better leave us divergents alone and keep yourself away from the list for the abhorrent.
