The Changes of Life

Life changes, and it was always expected to happen. Even after a change, that particular changed situation is also going to change. It is not something that I wasn’t expecting, but it did come all of a sudden, and it is actually a good thing. One more year without change and I might have been rather too hesitant to change – I would have detested it and might have tried to prevent it in all ways possible. But not now, as this change is something that I wanted long ago, even before I started this blog.

People still say that if you take a degree in MA English Language and Literature, you have to write NET and even try for JRF, and it is the natural path right ahead of you. They say that you have to follow this path or not do justice to what you have studied, and most probably you won’t get another job at all. I know that most of my friends have done that and the rest have gone on to do BEd and made the choice to do SET instead – note the difference, but I consider it rather minute.

If you look in our class, you can find a maximum of one person who hasn’t gone after NET or SET, and not trying to become the college professor or school teacher – I have made it two in that case, and it is the divergence that I have always wanted; with the master divergent movie Charlie winning so many of the state film awards, you might want the same too. Society has that idea that teaching in school or college is the better choice, especially for women, because they can reach home earlier, and there might be even many free hours – I know a few who have pursued the same for this reason.

I have walked around a lot these days through my favourite bus station!

I have walked around a lot these days through my favourite bus station!

Well, the case of post graduation in English has been rather strange. It is like the least professional course around here; you are not really preferred for most of the jobs out there. The newspapers and magazines ask for a journalism degree, and so I am glad to be part of a publishing house right now; it was getting seemingly impossible to get a job. Most people don’t even reply when an MA English graduate send a resume; they just don’t seem to have that idea that we are just readers and nothing else.

It is the same reason why me getting this job has been very significant. It has been the result of a long wait, and it is the same reason why I have broken my writing streak on my blog. If you remember, I have been writing continuously from December 9th 2014 to February 3rd 2016 – I continued for a few days after joining work, but it was getting tough with my timing as I start around 6:30 AM and return home around 8:30 PM – that is just the average, as I have reached at 7:30 and 9:30.

I have really less time at home, and so I have reduced my blogging just before reaching 500 posts on this blog, as this one is the post number 496. As of now, it seems that the 500th special post won’t happen anytime soon. But it might change some day, as the journey is just about 40 km even though it is the kind of a journey that can take about two hours, thanks to the pot-holes, traffic problems, change of timing of buses and the metro as well as fly-over constructions which are going on.

I travel through the bus station where I have passed through the most!

I once again travel through the bus station where I have passed through the most!

I have surely managed to be more used to it though, even as it still ends with me getting so much tired. I spend my time on the bus listening to music or watching some movie or television series in English. Well, at least I will have something to write about what I watch and the long journey which should actually finish in 45 minutes, but extends to two or even three hours based on which bus I manage to catch, and how many of times I have to change that giant transport!

Of those Happy Moments

The moments of happiness are mostly subjective. The things which can make one happy needn’t apply to others with the same power, or they might not apply at all. There are moments of passing examinations which brings a few people some happiness, but for me, it is just a case of relief. Some people are happy about seeing celebrities, but for me, it is just an experience. Some others are happy because India won a cricket match, but for me, it is a game and can only applaud. But I have my simpler moments.

A cup of tea at the Indian Coffee House: Having tea at one of the branches of he biggest group of family restaurants in Kerala has always been a moment of joy. When I was a kid, it always made me happy to see the workers with the special hats and turbans. The group is more of a socialist organization, and the tea here has been part of my life for such a long time. Wherever you travel in Kerala, Indian Coffee House is the name which you can trust, related to having food without any worries, and you can find ICH at many locations.

A drive through empty roads during the monsoon: I have always hated the heavy traffic and the heat which has prevented me from opening the windows and switching off the AC. My favourite moment of driving the Chevrolet Beat comes during the monsoon showers, as the rain keeps pouring down and I keep driving, opening and closing the windows according to the strength of the rain – I would keep driving through the most beautiful landscapes of Kerala until a tiny tea shop of my choice is reached.

An early morning motor-bike ride: Here is the most common thing in this list, I have been doing this for quite a long time. This early morning journey is one of the most refreshing things of the day, and these days as I go for early PSC coaching classes, the whole thing gets easier. There is no happiness in the return journey, as it happens after 10AM, which is too late – but happiness is achieved in the earlier journey which makes sure that the day remains good; yes, I am the one who wakes up early.

Watching the foggy world from the top of a mountain: When I talk about this moment of happiness, the first thing that comes to my mind is Ilaveezhapoonchira which has some of those moments closest to nature, with a lone tea shop at the top. It is applicable to many other places of higher altitude, but you need to visit this place, see the fog spread all around you and get lost in the moment of awesomeness. This is another beautiful destination in Kerala on which I have already written about.

Reading history or literature in an old building: There is a certain amount of difference about where you read a book, and this where I wish to read my books. It is more of happiness when you read them at a place where history stays ready to be awakened, and reflects the beauty of literature on the walls. Yes, there is a cup of tea to go together with this, and you end up reading the book with more interest, and finish off as an even happier person.

The sadness is when you can’t get tea when you need them, and when there is no nature when you look around. Fortunately, Kerala has a lot of both of these, and not many other things bring this much happiness as tea and nature – it gets better with the rain or the fog, and a few books can nicely contribute to the same. Unfortunately, except for the third one in the middle, none of the others have worked for me for some time – hoping for those moments of happiness to make a return.

Bedroom, Kitchen and Tea

I would not consider my life complete without a laptop, my books and the tea close enough to each other and to me, ready for a taste whenever I need them to. It was more of a basic need than just one of those few things which I wanted a lot. Due to the same, this new room which I have managed to convert into something different is very important to me. This hybrid which I have come up with, is one of the few things that I wanted a lot; the bedroom – kitchen combination. Note that this blog itself has tea as its central idea 😀

We moved to our new place just about one and half months ago, and there was the question about which room I wanted among the four with locks. As the ones below was best suited for the parents, I was left with the two on the second floor. One of them was a complete bedroom with cupboards and the other one was the former kitchen used by the tenants. Now, you can easily guess which one I had chosen.

Half bedroom and study, half kitchen - how it works

Half bedroom and study, half kitchen – how it works

Yes, I managed to choose the kitchen without much difficulties. It was the larger room because it was created from the open terrace space which was closed and made into the kitchen a few years ago. There was a lot of space there, and was undoubtedly the largest room in the house after our main hall. I am sure that not many people appreciated that choice though, because it was after all, a kitchen.

Just a view of the room from another angle

Just a view of the room from another angle

Many people did wonder if I live in a kitchen, but I have gone a long way beyond that question. There is the bed, a big almirah made of wood, the writing desk, a drawer unit, a steel stand, two chairs and a few other things which became part of the room. The cupboards of the kitchen were left as it were, only replacing those parts which had become old, with the new parts which looked the same.

People had asked me to destroy the cuboards and the kitchen sink, but I had said no. Why destroy something which can be so positively used? It is easy to destroy something, but a lot of effort would be needed to build something. It is a lovely kitchen, almost as good as our rebuilt one on the ground floor, at least in the looks. It would be a shame to destroy the useful stuff when so many people in our country can just hope for a home.

The types of tea that I am testing these days :D

The types of tea that I am testing these days 😀

So, I decided to divide my room, with the area from the sink to that end as my personal kitchen and from this end to the beginning of the sink as my study and bedroom. There is not really much cooking going on there though, as there is just the electric kettle which I use to make tea and enough hot water to drink. There are a few biscuits, tapioca chips, milk peda, potato chips, banana chips and similar stuff to have with tea, and thats all – but I am open for more in future.

My former room - had it painted in my favourite colours

I have made maximum use of the cupboards by putting books in the top ones and clothes and miscellaneous iteams in the ones below. The room at our earlier apartment was supposed to be just the regular bedroom, smaller and not able to take everything in. But this one has turned into a perfect room for me. I am self-sufficient with water, tea, books and the internet. What more do you need? May be I will invite the cat in and a few plants – lets see 😀

Divergence: A Crime?

This is a question which I should have asked much earlier, but there is no limit for the time required for realization, I would say. I had the opportunity to watch the movie Divergent based on Veronica Roth’s debut novel with the same name. Yes, Shailene Woodley is a dashing young actress playing Beatrice Prior, but that is not the central thing about it, even as nobody can deny the fact that it helped to make sure that the movie was not missed. The comparisons to Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games is also relevant, but I would rather get into the main points now.

The divergence of Tris: So Beatrice a.k.a Tris is a divergent, not able to be grouped into any of the factions of the post-apocalyptic Chicago because she doesn’t possess the attributes for them. She was different from the others, but if the others were to realize the same, she would have no future of her own. Each person had to blend in somewhere and go on working with the faction, and her ability to be different was a case of panic. The world was set, and everyone had to fit in. The divergents were to be feared by the government for their brilliance and those ideas which could change the system.

The present scenario: There is no real option to be a divergent in our world. There are people who start groups and try to make people agree to their new found rights or abuse people to get acceptance. No, I am not talking about any of them. I am talking about being different by one’s own, being someone else by thoughts and action and not joining just another group to become of a member of another team which itself ruins the idea of being divergent, further creating more and more divergence forming more factions.

A person can’t be grouped into a category. There is more than one skill that a person can exhibit and there is always more than one kind of thought that he or she can have. A person is beyond all divisions as an individual. He can’t act like someone else just because he is part of that society. You can’t expect a person to paint his house in the same colour just because someone else has that colour or most people choose that particular shade. You can’t tell someone to follow a behaviour, no people shouldn’t be predicted, as they are not playing game, they are living lives.

We have been plagued, almost all of us in this part of the world has been chosen to study Engineering or Medicine, and was there really a choice until the recession came up and suppressed the latter up-to an extent? Can people always conduct a marriage in a simple manner without showing the vanity and spend the rest of the money feeding the poor? Can we Catholics marry without taking that terrible compulsary pre-marital course which has absolutely no use for the life post-marital life as long as we can’t figure out love by ourselves? Do we need to stand on a stage, grinning for the video camera till the wedding function ends?

These should have been easy things to do, but considering the current scenario and the attitude of the people, I would think that it is more difficult than the crow flying upside down or having a beautiful world of goodness. Our chance at divergence is pretty low unless our parents give support or our relatives are that damn good. But usually there are no real choices, we either agree to get rid of our divergence or rather choose to live our life hiding it or taking it out to bring the omnipresence of the people around us.

Be prepared to fight for divergence (photo from Divergent FB Page)

Always be prepared to fight for divergence (photo from Divergent FB Page)

People will always ask what we are doing and why are we not doing a job. People will ask why we are not getting married. They are nice questions and thanks for asking. But we are divergents, and the elixir of divergence that runs through our veins might ask some question to you which you might not want to hear or answer. In Divergent, our heroine could see through the fake visages, and may be we will see through your questions and it certainly won’t do any good for you. So, better leave us divergents alone and keep yourself away from the list for the abhorrent.
