Best of 2017 in a Flash

2017 had its own interesting flicks to make things better, and among them, here are those which I found to be the best Malayalam movies of the year. Even though there might not have been a movie which would break all records, or would be considered as one of the greatest of them all, we surely had some excellent works. We all need more movies to be released so that the choices increase, but it is up to us to make sure that most of them will be watched, and will not get the negative result that they don’t deserve. These six are surely the kind of flicks that you can choose to watch without second thoughts.

1. Take Off :: Quoting from my own earlier post here: “This one is Malayalam movie industry’s answer to Airlift, but takes the time to get more out of the emotional side with a first half which establishes the main characters and the situation of the protagonist really well. Taking a page out of a real incident and adding the needed creativity, Take Off becomes the movie that is not easy to find fault with. There is Parvathy as the protagonist doing an excellent job, and there is Fahadh Faasil who gets things to be more intense in the second half. Kunchacko Boban remains serene with his act. The positive opinions received are all deserving.”

2. C/O Saira Banu :: Quoting from my own earlier post here: “This one is an interesting movie which moves from family drama to its twists after the half time. It deals with some interesting incidents which have happened in our society, and also leaves with a message along with an ending which comes as a pleasant surprise with a nice turn of events. It questions not only a past, but also the present and the future in a prejudiced society that we live in. Manju Warrier and Amala Akkineni are the ones who shine in this movie which will work for not just one category of viewers. Along with Rani Padmini and How Old Are You?, this one will be on the list of the best works of Manju Warrier after her grand return.”

3. Sakhavu :: There is the strength of ideology behind this movie, and it goes towards taking a righteous stand, especially when a political leader is concerned – on what the left ideals really mean, if they are implemented in the right way. The message is strong, and there is the presence of feel-good elements. Here, Nivin Pauly comes in two roles, and among the two, it is the new-age role that suits the best for him – the other role also demands him to play the elder version of the character, which also leaves a mark. There is the new generation social worker portrayed nicely with all the shortcuts of life which are taken, and there is the maturity of the old generation comrade, who has struggled so hard with everything in life for the party as well as the society.

4. Godha :: One quality that Godha has retained from the same director’s Kunjiramayanam is its quality in simplicity; as we look through these two movies, we see simple things made beautiful or memorable. The latter was all about making its comic side more and more effective while the former here works on delivering the inspiration on the big screen. In a world which is being swallowed by those sporting events which has more money and bigger heroes, there are the sports other than cricket which struggles to find a path towards attention, and Godha has certainly caught your eyes. Tovino has another big movie with Wamiqa debuting great in Malayalam.

5. Tiyaan :: The thought-provoking moments of Tiyaan are intense, with that intensity like never before. The dialogues are stronger than ever, and we feel all the correct emotions in each of them, whether it is anger, hate, fear or grief. There are signs of what is to come from the beginning itself, and we feel how this is going to be something different, and it is. The whole thing remains a thought-provoking saga, and we are left with hope in a world which doesn’t have much of the same with almost everyone being hypocrites. There might be complexity within, but the final message is rather too simple, with all religions leading to one God, and love being the path.

6 Mayaanadhi :: As this one brings a new love story of this age, the melodrama never finds a seat. There is a realistic approach in this movie, and we never really gets tired of the same, even when the movie seems to get slow in between. We see how much people need each other, when things get better, or when they get terrible. The protagonists are two people who have struggled with their lives, and their world is something which is not difficult to relate as we understand their circumstances. There is the overall sadness in this movie, which seems to reflect on the depressing human condition which remains the same, no matter how the world changes. There are also some harsh realities reflected too, with either fate being so cruel, or the society being against the individual. Tovino and Aishwarya makes a wonderful pair.

Warriors of Facebook

Do you know enough about the warriors of Facebook? They are still there. More than an year ago, they were busy abusing Maria Sharapova and she went on to win the Grand Slam; they were abusing Mitchell Johnson and he played a major role in the defeat Indian cricket team faced in the hands of Australia. Prithviraj Sukumaran whom they abused is now writing a nice success story which started with Celluloid and Memories which goes on through Ennu Ninte Moideen and Amar Akbar Anthony, and the one whom they hated so much, Sreesanth is back.

There was another person whom the Facebook trolls didn’t like; it was Aashiq Abu when he had a negative opinion about Kamal Hassan’s Vishwaroopam during its release. The same situation is faced by Jude Anthany Joseph, the director of Om Shanti Oshana when he gave the idea that he didn’t like Aashiq Abu’s Rani Padmini. It is surprising how the situations change. It seems that nothing matters in the end for the Facebook warriors of abuse, because they just want to shower everything bad on someone all the time, and people at the receiving end changes.

Om Shanthi Oshana: A movie depicting true love.

The problem started when Jude Anthany Joseph won a State Award, and a few people who were fans of a few actors, actresses and directors started losing their mind. They started using fake Facebook profiles to abuse the man. Well, those who come up with fake profiles and nonsense don’t deserve a nice reply. Those who can’t be decent to others shouldn’t expect a good reply from anyone. These people who are completely against people having opinions don’t even deserve to comment. It is all about mutual respect and only when you talk in a decent way that you will get respect in return.

This is a world when pages take money and keep saying that a movie is so good, and there are actors, actresses and directors who keep saying that other movies are good. Meanwhile, Jude Anthany Joseph came up and told that he didn’t like a movie. He just told what he felt after watching a movie. He became one of those few people who spoke his mind rather than simply saying that all movies are so good. Aashiq Abu also told that earlier, and when these people have their opinions, it means that they are directors who can think differently, and it is a positive sign for Malayalam movie industry.

But the fans will only take these negatively. They think that it is against a person, or rather their favourite celebrities. It is time that these people understand that a movie is a work of art which is open to criticism, and there are no actors in a movie, but characters. We compare the performances, but we never judge them by the people whom they are in real life. Some people will like a few movies and some people don’t. If you go on abusing people who don’t like your favourite movie and bring the spam everywhere about this movie being the greatest movie in history, do you think that it is good? Do you fans think that it is a better thing to do?

ranipadmini (1)

About Jude Anthany Joseph, mine is not that same as his opinion about Rani Padmini, and it is the exact opposite of what he said. At the same time, I don’t even agree to his Facebook status that Amar Akbar Anthony was a great entertainer. I also don’t find the exact same reasons to like Ennu Ninte Moideen as he talked about on his Facebook status. I have agreed to his opinion on Kunjiramayanam, and also on Loham – the list goes on and on. But does that matter much as long as he is a person and it is just another opinion as it is mine? People from the industry who keep talking about the movies as great, awesome, fantastic and all, just need some favour from the rest of the people from industry!

But what they have to understand is that while watching a movie, they should be people with opinions, and they need to speak their opinion and not something which they prepared to say before watching a movie. It is our right to show that we have individuality and the ability to be ourselves. Remember the idea of Mili? It is our decision to post what we like on our pages, and the blind fans who are yet to discover the freedom of opinions can make the choice not to visit and read! If you have the ability to think, accept the fact that people have opinions on a work of art, and don’t take it personally.

Mili Lost on NH10

It has been months since I watched and reviewed the movie Mili (https://moviesofthesoul.wordpress.com/2015/01/27/mili) and also wrote a number of related posts which talked about flick and a few things which are directly or indirectly linked to a movie. Even after these many months have passed, there is a question which keeps lingering through my mind, and it is about why people are unable to comprehend the good intentions of the movie and how well it has managed to stay out of the masala elements and make a fine movie close to life.

Yes, some people just can’t relate to the character. But that doesn’t make Mili a mean character, but a girl suffering due to circumstances. Just because they are not introverts, these certain movie watchers think that people who are not extroverts don’t exist or don’t have the right to live inside their smaller worlds. These people have a certain problem with “the other” which they will keep exhibiting because they feel that they will have the support of people of their kind because they are used to hate.

The story of Mili should begin and end with everyone having a personality.

Well, in that case, I choose not to relate with these people who have no empathy at all. I am surprised or rather shocked that people are still choosing the masala entertainers with the heroes who are so negative in their treatment of law and order/women/truth, and they refuses to accept movies with positive messages having a protagonist who is true to life and trying to find her feet in a world of chaos. Well, there are too many bullies out there who wishes to keep the people with problems away from their lives, and it is their easy solution.

This is the world of fans, and they are of that kind who supports the movies of either those heroes who are past their prime or those newer heroes who are there just because their parents have some influence in the movie industry; sometimes the fans also pass on to the next generation. May be if we stop watching the movies of these so called superstars who are forced on us by birth, such fans will also cease to exist. There is no choice of superstars here, because some are born and labelled so and are brought to the audience with the title. What is more surprising is that the fans even talk about “killing the movie” – honour killing for their superstars? That NH10 model? Well, the talks from some people seems to indicate that it is also possible in the future.

Mili will always be Mili. If you don't like it, please go to the Ninth Circle of Hell.

We should get out of this family business in movies, and only then the fan menace can be dealt with, and then the situation will get better in the theatres too. The lack of acceptance of a movie just because the so called superstar hasn’t acted in a movie and adding dumb excuses for the same, is rather shameful. I have heard similar comments while watching NH10 – why is people hoping for the end of a good character when the heroine has done so well in the role? Is it a new generation trend? Some people have the attitude of those villains of NH10 when facing a good movie with a message – they just can’t take it.

Why do people think that only the speeches done by their role-model are worth the applause? Why is it that goodness on the screen go over the head of some new generation people and a few old generation pretenders? Why is it that these fans make so much noise in the local theatre for the movies which don’t have their favourite stars and one can do nothing but watch the same only in the multiplexes? Is empathy and sense clearly lost? The situation of NH10 exists in the minds of people – I will say the same about the incidents which are depicted in the Anushka Sharma starrer.

Yes, there can be no method of teaching empathy and sense to these people, as it had to be taught at home. Some people have surely spared the rod and spoiled their children. But there seems to be no hope for the movie watcher who wish to get into the shoes of the character and see things from his or her angle, as well as wander through that world which exists within hte screen. There is just terror in the theatres, with ridiculous judgments clearly lacking in sense, empathy and an actual desire to watch the movie. They are people of NH10.

***The images used in this blog post are from the Official Facebook Page of the movie Mili. When I say NH10, please read it as “the movie with the same name”. *Also a reminder to those who are fighting over IPL – it is not real, and neither is the title of “the best team of all-time”. The worst fans title should be shared with the new generation cricket fans.

Of Fans and Cinema

We have always known that celebrities have blind fans, and some of them are a long way ahead in the level of stupidity. We have had our own ridiculous cricket fans, and there are those fans of the movie stars who take things to the next level. These days, we can see the bad and the more terrible fans as they are everywhere. It is hard to even recognize a good fan – it is a rare thing.

I have been watching less Malayalam movies these days. It has never been the plan, and there was never such an idea to avoid them. But the tendency to watch these movies are becoming so less. Some people say that the piracy is the reason for people not coming to the theatres to watch Malayalam movies, but the truth is that, it is the fans – they are the ones who are responsible for the decrease in the number of viewers in the theatres.

The multiplexes in the malls are better choices, but for how long?

The multiplexes in the malls are better choices, but can you guess for how long?

These fans make life miserable for others who try to watch the movie in peace. The only thing which they can do is to keep yelling, clapping and howling depending on whose movie it is, and to which celebrity do they have that feeling of worship. It is a terrible feeling to be there at the local theatres, and even in multiplexes, they often try to create a pathetic situation. Yes, they do that when they are not abusing people who don’t like the movies of their favourite stars.

Well, sitting in the darkness of the theatre and between a number of friends, some people think that they can say anything even in the presence of families with kids. They have the privilege to make that kind of noise which makes it difficult for the others to watch the movie. They also got the right to shower abuses in the darkness of the movie hall because they think that the world is only theirs – they are like “Bane” with the exact meaning and also as that villain of Gotham.

A list without the presence of Malayalam movies is also possible.

A list without the presence of Malayalam movies is also possible in the future.

You get to watch Malayalam movies at any theatre near you and it is an advantage for the industry, but why are people, especially families and those who actually have a working intellect stay away from the movies for most of the time? It is because of these so called movie fans who provide a very unpleasant movie watching experience. When some people even choose to smoke inside the theatre, why are the authorities not ready to throw them out?

Is being decent too much to ask for? Is the use of respectable language that difficult? We keep watching that no smoking advertisement, and I have seen people smoking through it. We need an advertisement against indecent talks and behaviour, but that too will go over the head just like those smoking advertisements. Do these people even respect the views of others? The answer would be another question – why do they?

It is not easy for the fans to respect the opinions of others, but the more surprising thing is that they can’t even respect their fellow human beings. It is time that the theatre owners take a tough stand, and the movie stars should also try to make the situation better. The family viewers have already begun to prefer the multiplexes only, and with the same, they are moving to Hollywood and Bollywood. It is time for the Malayalam movie industry to have a cultured young audience, and in the absence of the same, there will be almost no family audience. The families have been the strength, and if the Malayalam movie industry no longer seems to feel the need for that section, it is a definite reason for a future downfall.

Time for Some Coupons

The power of online shopping has been at the highest level these days, as it has evolved from being a stranger to someone that we closely know, even those most of my known world is not that much part of doing this online; they are rather traditional, but I am not – a lot of things at home including my mobile phone and the tab has origins in an online shopping website and are working so well without showing even the smallest signs of problems.

I have bought many things from a number of online shopping websites, and what has helped us more than any other site is the website bookmyshow.com without which watching a number of movies would have been near impossible task on the first or the second day of its release. Yes, this is the kind of online shopping which came to me much earlier than the usual stuff, and we have chosen to book tickets and make sure that big movies like the sequels of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, X-Men and all were never missed.

bookms

There are some nice offers at 27coupons.com which can be used for the same and you have to love how some of the offers seem to be, like buy one ticket and get one free – it is a fair deal because we mostly go for a movie with one friend; I have rarely had more than one with me, to be exact. It is all good, isn’t it? No longer standing behind those long queues which seems to go on and on till eternity, and you have this nice offer.

Then there is that 50% off on booking movie tickets – it inspires you to watch more and more movies, and it something that I really want to do right now. I have been watching less movies these days, and this is the kind of thing that can improve the numbers with ease. After all, that big crowd is the most significant reason why one won’t want to watch the flicks; and you often end up paying too much – the absence of a movie partner also counts, but the rush is always a big problem, and this coupon adds the big discount for even better motivation.

flipkt

20% cash back offer is also fair, because it is always good to get some return of funds; it just feels good. These are just a few of the offers, and there are more like 25% off, gaining 5% cash back, 10 reward points for every Rs 125, Rs 500 off and many other things depending on various factors. What 27coupons.com makes sure about is that you go to bookmyshow.com to book a ticket, and this website is there to provide some special offers and make you more and more interested. Here is a full list: http://www.27coupons.com/stores/bookmyshow.com/

We do spend so much time on the internet these days, an it is time we make better use of it, and for the same, 27coupons.com is the website that can make a big difference. I would also prefer to use the same website for discounts at Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon and e-bay because the need for online shopping will only increase, along with the desire for more and more discounts to keep everyone happy.

There is the bright future for us – the people belonging online as much as offline; it is 27coupons.com which is going to save a lot of money for us while watching movies, and also related to shopping. I have been reluctant to begin online shopping, but with 27coupons.com, one has to wonder why the delay; because the offers are good and it can only get better for you. I leave you with link to one of my favourite offers there: http://www.27coupons.com/coupons/bookmyshow.com/upto-50-off-on-booking-movie-tickets-88933/

The Loss of Power

You might have noticed that the last movie I watched in the theatre was on December eight, and I have only published two more reviews of two older movies which I had watched much earlier. I don’t think that this is closer to the end, as the Vampire Bat is running out of Vampire Owls, but this is as close to it as it gets. Nowadays an owl is available only on the phone.

I am not denying the fact that I have watched many movies alone, and going to the theatre all by myself has been part of my life. But the situation seems that nowadays I have to go to the theatre alone all the time. I don’t consider it that interesting, because I need opinions of the people who come to watch a movie with me, and it helps to make sure that my opinion is not completely personal.

Movies keep coming like the waterfalls on a rainy season (taken on my DSC W310)

Movies keep coming like the waterfalls on a rainy season (taken on my DSC W310)

Until the weekend before the last two, the Vampire Bat could find one person to accompany him to the theatre. But things have changed now, especially this year has seen too many of my friends going outside India for studies or work. There have been one friend leaving for Germany, another for Italy, one for the Middle East, one for the United Kingdom, one for Mauritius and seven for the United States of America.

The procedure was complete with last weekend as I was left with nobody to accompany me to the theatres. There are also a number of friends already at Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai and Pune, with no hope for a movie watching partner. The presence of the eternal NET exams and the never-ending question of a job also complicates things. Then there is the most awesome kitten, Simona the Lionhearted who asks for presence.

I had expectation that I might reach the one hundred with the number of movies I watched this year, but now it seems that I am certain to lag behind, with an improvement of the last year’s statistics nowhere near possible. May be I can get some of my cousins to accompany me, but I don’t have hopes on them, and all those friends and cousins who are married seem completely out of the equation.

The Vampire Bat becomes more of the lone tree (photo details as previous)

The Vampire Bat becomes more of the lone tree (photo details as previous)

I am also having more and more thoughts about concentrating more on this blog, even as Movies of the Soul remain my most popular blog, and it was the one which helped me to go on with something consistently for the first time. But now it seems that it gets me tired and lonely. I feel the a similar emotion as I could sense with Travel Diaries which hasn’t had a post from me for quite a long time, or The Divine Epic which has me posting once in a month. No wonder I am posting on this blog a lot more.

There is still the joy that one gets out of reviewing a movie, which has been more than what I have had while watching one. May be the Vampire Bat is even older than he claims, dating back to more centuries. May be vampirism is slowly becoming extinct. There is no beginning or end to my stories of life, but the Vampire Bat is an entity who hasn’t been too proud of his immortality. May be he can stick to writing reviews about those movies which have left the theatres and may be bring in one flick here or there from the theatre during some lone visits. He actually wants to watch one movie right now. Who knows what the future brings.

The Phone that Saves

Inspired by the powers of the new ASUS ZenFone, I have taken over the responsibility to transform my little mobile phone into something like a superhero in a world which needs a lot of saving, from the bad movies which are released in this world. Taking the situation in our nation, Bollywood takes the opportunity to unleash hell on its people, the poor viewers are bombarded with bad movies one after the other, and this chemical attack leaves the fans incapable of watching any other movie in any other language.

The grand superpower that my mobile phone will have is to save the good people who wish to watch nicely made movies rather than the nonsense that are usually fed to the viewers in the disguise of movies. The level of movies have been declining day by day. Even Hollywood has to depend on the remakes of the old good movies at times, and Bollywood has absolutely no idea what they are doing, with coming up with the worst movies of them all. We don’t deserve them, and the movies don’t deserve us as audience.

My mobile phone and the old DVD collection which deserves a check :D

My mobile phone and the old UK DVD collection which deserves a check 😀

But even such cases have their own supporters, just like any political or religious moment will have their own people. They are the fans who are completely and blindly into celebrity worship. More people suffer in this world due to fake reviews posted by fan-boys and fan-girls than those who don’t really read the reviews. Each and every fan comes up with an opinion that the movie of their favourite celebrity is good, and this has lead to the rise of the worst movies which are liked only by the fans, but the rest are also forced to suffer the torture.

The word-of-mouth opinion can no longer be trusted. This is where my super-phone will come to the scene and save the movie watcher’s world. This is why this phone will consider a scan on the theatre, find the people who are already in the theatre, check their reactions and also their own mobile phones to find if they are blind fans of any superstar attempting to praise or bring down the movie for no reason. It will also go through their mobiles to see their interests and previous history. It will also have a look at the theatre ambiance give a rating to the place in a score between zero and ten. It will also find good movie DVDs by just scanning through the covers.

It will identify the keywords which have been used about this movie by the neutral viewers who have a movie taste that matches me, and will find out what the flick is actually about and give it a rating according to how much it will interest me. For example, a horror movie will surely have a certain boost in the points, and if it is a movie like The Cabin in the Woods which is more than a horror movie, or You’re Next which finishes with a message, there will be more points added. The mobile will have the ability to know what I have written about other movies and thus used to my tastes. This super-power as well as the hero is called the Truth-On.

The mobile itself is a movie lover, keeping its own movie wallpaper :D

The mobile itself is a movie lover, keeping its own movie wallpaper of THG 😀

An advanced version of the phone will actually come up with a few points about the movie which the user will find interesting. For the same, the phone has to travel through the portal which gave it the superpowers, the Portal of the Oblivion, which further leads to the world of Absentia which lies between this world and the Other, from where no phone has yet returned without losing its battery or keypad if present. Not really recommended for any phone unless it is as powerful as a Zenphone – it is a risky procedure, but one day, my phone will take that path too.

Coming back to the new Asus Zenphone, I do hope that I will be able to buy one when I get a job, and if I do get one. It is undoubtedly one incredible mobile phone there. Then there are the looks and the name – how can someone not like that name? I am writing this post as part of contest organized by Indiblogger and ASUS about “Taking inspiration from the super powers of the ASUS Zenphone, give your phone a super power and tell us how it would help you see what others can’t see and do what others can’t do!” and the details can be found here: http://www.asus.com/campaign/zenfone/IN/
