What Happens in Life

Six months have passed and this is the half-time for the year 2016. Well, I found that out just two days ago. The last six months have been the fastest part of an year in my whole life. I feel that I missed most of the days during these months, and that there is the need to keep writing down these days so that it won’t give me the feeling that I missed some of these. I have never really known the existence of some of these days because time has taken off with some super-powered wings.

These days, I have been thinking that there are just two sides to everything, and when we have free-time, people are just bothered about it, and when we are so busy, people are just not happy about it. These days, most of my time is spent in the office or in the traffic, and people have been asking about what I have been doing to be so busy. Well, even when I was not working, I did keep myself busy. These days, as I have a job, I am busy without any need to keep myself so.

There is something about starting from the city in a long-distance bus, and after one and half hours of traveling, you are still in that city. At the same time, you have traveled through so many pot-holes that you will feel that it is the time to retire. Meanwhile, the rain keeps coming down so hard that you have to keep the shutter down and be denied the view outside. To add to that, there is more water in the pot-holes than in the canal that runs in front of our home.

But things do keep happening, and leaving the confidential information aside, there has been the presence of a new car. Yes, finally got to my first sedan and the very first diesel car – this is also the first time I have gone for red. There has been a lot of traveling after that, even though the only day that I get to travel is a Sunday, with six working days on my list. As Id-Ul-Fitr was there, that came as some relief, and the next relief is to be on the Independence Day next month, and the month after that, Onam.

Jpeg

The number of movies I have watched at the theatres in the last six months is also at an all-time low for the last few years, as the movie count got stuck at seventeen instead of the fifty which I was planning to complete. The journey of the day that lasts from early morning to night has taken the movie time too, and I wouldn’t dare to remember the last time I watched the television – but that is really a good thing though; there was never something that good on the idiot box.

I have had good time with work, but things before and after work has been pretty much the trouble. There is that list of things which are to be done otherwise, and there are those extra things which are to be there as part of the contribution from others. Just now, I have managed to sneak in and get a stereo and the nitrogen filling for the car. The rain has made sure that I will have all the exercise I need with washing the car.

Jpeg

Maybe something interesting will come up in life outside work too! As some people say, there should be the right time for all of these; twists happen as they have occured on many occasions in my life. There have been a few interesting movies which I watched in the bus and reviewed though, including Kill Command, Deadpool, The Witch, The Boy, The Visit, Brooklyn, Sinister II, Knock Knock, The Vatican Tapes, Wrecker, Victor Frankenstein and Inside Out.

The Changes of Life

Life changes, and it was always expected to happen. Even after a change, that particular changed situation is also going to change. It is not something that I wasn’t expecting, but it did come all of a sudden, and it is actually a good thing. One more year without change and I might have been rather too hesitant to change – I would have detested it and might have tried to prevent it in all ways possible. But not now, as this change is something that I wanted long ago, even before I started this blog.

People still say that if you take a degree in MA English Language and Literature, you have to write NET and even try for JRF, and it is the natural path right ahead of you. They say that you have to follow this path or not do justice to what you have studied, and most probably you won’t get another job at all. I know that most of my friends have done that and the rest have gone on to do BEd and made the choice to do SET instead – note the difference, but I consider it rather minute.

If you look in our class, you can find a maximum of one person who hasn’t gone after NET or SET, and not trying to become the college professor or school teacher – I have made it two in that case, and it is the divergence that I have always wanted; with the master divergent movie Charlie winning so many of the state film awards, you might want the same too. Society has that idea that teaching in school or college is the better choice, especially for women, because they can reach home earlier, and there might be even many free hours – I know a few who have pursued the same for this reason.

I have walked around a lot these days through my favourite bus station!

I have walked around a lot these days through my favourite bus station!

Well, the case of post graduation in English has been rather strange. It is like the least professional course around here; you are not really preferred for most of the jobs out there. The newspapers and magazines ask for a journalism degree, and so I am glad to be part of a publishing house right now; it was getting seemingly impossible to get a job. Most people don’t even reply when an MA English graduate send a resume; they just don’t seem to have that idea that we are just readers and nothing else.

It is the same reason why me getting this job has been very significant. It has been the result of a long wait, and it is the same reason why I have broken my writing streak on my blog. If you remember, I have been writing continuously from December 9th 2014 to February 3rd 2016 – I continued for a few days after joining work, but it was getting tough with my timing as I start around 6:30 AM and return home around 8:30 PM – that is just the average, as I have reached at 7:30 and 9:30.

I have really less time at home, and so I have reduced my blogging just before reaching 500 posts on this blog, as this one is the post number 496. As of now, it seems that the 500th special post won’t happen anytime soon. But it might change some day, as the journey is just about 40 km even though it is the kind of a journey that can take about two hours, thanks to the pot-holes, traffic problems, change of timing of buses and the metro as well as fly-over constructions which are going on.

I travel through the bus station where I have passed through the most!

I once again travel through the bus station where I have passed through the most!

I have surely managed to be more used to it though, even as it still ends with me getting so much tired. I spend my time on the bus listening to music or watching some movie or television series in English. Well, at least I will have something to write about what I watch and the long journey which should actually finish in 45 minutes, but extends to two or even three hours based on which bus I manage to catch, and how many of times I have to change that giant transport!

Impact of Being Good

We have always wondered about the best way to make the world a better place to live in. Well there are many ways to make a positive impact on the world, and among these right thing to make the best impact, I would choose “being good” to be the best option. doubt if many people have checked for the impact of being good. They look for the impact which they can make by being rich and influential, but the best idea, if you ask me, is to be good and remain so.

Haven’t we been appreciating good men and women in the past? Didn’t saints have a better role to play in each religion than the common people? Aren’t those people whom we respect as great men, saints and social reformers the people who were good and wanted to change the world to make it a better place not just for them, but also for the future generation? Haven’t we all agreed to the fact that these people were great and have made a positive impact?

DSC02179

Well, people have short memories. They find it difficult to remember their past, and this is more of a memory loss of convenience because they don’t want to be that good either. They want to be wealthy and famous in every way possible. They have found it easier to lie to their conscience if there is something like that left with them. If Mephistopheles had asked for their soul in return for luxuries, they would easily give it along with an extra soul from one of their friends. The world is different now, it truly is!

But one has to wonder how and why this world has changed, and when this radical change took its roots. It might not have been a sudden procedure, but it has been a powerful one, no doubt about that. Nowadays, a successful person with money and influence is a lot more liked than a good person – it is a case of shame and a reflection of the pathetic situation of our society. It should be left for a good person to make that positive impact, and a lot is to be done if the world is to have enough goodness in it.

DSC04533

I would say that the first thing about being good is to be nice to others. Actually, it is actually the most difficult things to do these days for some people. In a world of hatred, being good to others in words as well as in action is not that easy. Hate comes easy in this world, and abusing others is fun for the new generation. The truth is that nobody wants anything good to happen to others, and so there will always be the reason to hate others. As it is a natural thing, there can be no questions about it.

Hate and abuse has never been the solution. The impact that hate makes won’t stay forever, but the true change can be brought about by goodness. It is by the power of goodness that the world has to go through that change, and it has to be the light of the world, in a world which has been brought down by haters and abusers, a good number of them being taken over Facebook – do you see any goodness in social media? Well, it is quite rare if you ask me. A lot of people have been too much into showing their lack of culture.

There are many opportunities for us to do good, and it is part of our daily lives. We see people who are in need each and every day, and the impact that we can make in their lives will be a lot. It might be a small thing for us, but something that will define their lives with the impact that it creates. It is from these small and random acts of goodness that a better world comes into the picture. The responsibility for the same lies in each one of us, as we strive to make that impact – the best one possible.

The Twist of Fate

It was a long time ago that I had this doubt in choosing between English and History for graduation. The problem was that I liked both of the subjects almost equally, and couldn’t figure out a choice between them. I was also not confident about choosing between these two also because I was a very doubtful person, and wondered which of these would do me good and which one won’t be that good for me. There was not going to be much difference in the studies for me, but there was going to be certain change in the results.

I used to read both English Literature and History works, and so that was going to be a problem. So, I decided to ask a few people. The result was all on one side though, in favour of English. I tried tossing a coin, and even that showed English. Only the time spent in the games Age of Empires, Rise of Nations, Civilization and Caesar had me with another ideas. People were all so much in favour of English that I wondered why they hadn’t recommended Humanities to me for Plus Two. Still, I was closer to one of my two favourite courses then.

And then there was the Lighthouse Beach at Kovalam.

We need lighthouses in our lives to show where to go without hitting the rocks.

I was still going to tell these people when I joined and where, because letting too many people know things was the reason behind most of my problems. So, I called my friend who was studying outside Kerala, and as many of the others and almost every friend whom I had from school or neighbourhood, he was also going through Engineering. If he wasn’t going through that course, that would have been a surprise, because I have had the title of being the only one strange non-Engineer, non-Doctor person.

He told me to go on with English because he knew that I wrote something which none of my friends wanted to read or understand. I felt that it was a fair suggestion because I had often wondered what I wrote about and why. Choosing English could give me a better direction at that time. There was the need to read more and direct my writings better. So, choosing English was the right thing to do, and History could happen on another day. So, the friend went back to the procedure of collecting supplementary exams, and I made clear about the choice again.

During these days, I wonder about the decisions, but choosing English hasn’t really bothered me at all, even as I couldn’t find a job after that; it is just that the route doesn’t make me sad. It is something that I had wanted and with both the BA as well as the MA, I have never really felt any big trouble during the course. Even now, I find happiness in being MA English graduate rather than any other, and this also meant that I could study in the one college where I always wanted to study. It was the right choice; may be History would have done just okay, but the choice was still fine.

Darkness spreads. But how fast can that happen?

Choices do make things happen – what if we take that wrong turn instead?

But I did take my second degree in History too, and so it wasn’t really a loss even there. In the end, it was about which degree to come first and which one to follow. With nothing lost in the end, the #SachchiAdvice worked better because the language had given me more power, and I could use a good amount of this acquired strength while writing for the History exams too. History had also come as one of the extra subjects to study for the English graduation. So everything was related.

Nowadays, when I wonder what I should have done different or what I could have chosen in another way, this choice doesn’t come to the list of bad decisions, and it happens to be the #SachchiAdvice which has made things work. There is always the need for some confirmation related to the decisions from people we trust, and I haven’t been that good in making decisions. But here, the decision was the kind which still inspires me to write. I feel that if I was not MA English, I wouldn’t have even started a blog at WordPress.

I am participating in the #SachchiAdvice Contest by MaxLife in Association with BlogAdda.

Religion and Love

There might be a lot of people who have achieved more, and a good number of them got the potential to reach the summit of greatness like nobody else – it is the quality of the list of people related to #WillOfSteel by JSW that makes us feel proud of our fellow countrymen at the first look. But then there is the realization about what we really want. Above all, what comes to the mind is more about what the nation needs than anything else. It is not people who make a lot of money or those who become famous for being good at a random thing – it is more.

Each and everyday that we spend on Facebook or the internet as a whole has become more of a curse, and it continues like there is no end. There are more hate messages than there is the true essence of any religion. Everyone has their own idea of bringing hatred, and they go on with the same. People hate all who spread the message of love just because they are of another religion, and we know how the venom spreads when some people opens their mouth.

Therefore, Krishnadas becomes the man whom the nation really needs and should inspire a lot more with the message “Follow your religion, love everybody”. He has spread the message for years as he stands at the centre of the busy street holding the placard having the message; also leaving something for the people who visit the beach. With a few declarations which have been made in the recent days, I would expect the intolerance to rise to a new level and people are going to be doubtful about the other religions. Some worship centres are going to be closed to others due to fear of mob violence, and some devotees are going to avoid certain places of worship due to fear of the same. This is where people like him can do wonders.

wos

When we wander through the dark realms of the internet, we see those high achievers and those men with lots of money, education and fame that make ridiculous speeches spreading hatred against other religions. Then we have this man who spreads love in the name of all religions to everyone alike. If your religion is not love and kindness, but hatred for other religions, you need to rethink in the name of any God which you follow – is this what your God has taught you? If hatred comes free with some people, you have to wonder what kind of devotees they are.

Some people bring the past to hate other religions, but if you do repeat what has been happening in the past in present modern age, it only gets worse in your case. It doesn’t get any better, and extremism in the modern world of globalization is plain stupid, no matter how much you can fool people. The world has changed, and it is time for people to stop going through the Dark Ages again. Yes, some people need to be reminded of love very often and may be we can have this written everywhere! This is actually with a potential for the end of religious terrorism that we have here!

What we need are people like him, not politicians who divide us in the name of religion, caste and many other things. We need educated people who understand the true meaning of religions, and spread the message of love. We don’t need the religious leaders who spend their time talking about how bad the other religions are, and we don’t need those who care about others only after looking at what has been filled in the “religion” column. Yes, love people regardless of their religion – why is it so difficult these days?

Well, all we see on the road these days are religious processions and political protesters on the roads, but it is so difficult to spread love. May this man’s #WillOfSteel be inspiration to many, and work as a device for not hating other religions just because some of those so called “leaders” say so. If anyone comes close to being a true sage these days, it is him. We need someone like him everywhere as we always see the loss of respect towards other cultures and religions. People need to know that being Indian is beyond religions. This man is more than just a sign, because his sign is the new hope. He has #WillOfSteel.

I’m voting for Krishnadas’ #WillOfSteel and blogging on BlogAdda to help him get felicitated and eventually enabled by JSW.

The Worst that We See

We are forced to watch some of the worst advertisements because we have to look at the idiot box at times, and now even Youtube is doing the same. I have hated the motor-bike advertisements so much and I never wanted to talk about them (especially of Bajaj Pulsar) – most of those which we saw on the screen never really had anything to do with a particular bike. The same is the case of many others, but the ones I list below pretend that they are so awesome, while they are nowhere near doing that.

Special mention: Fair and Lovely Ads
I have always found the Fair and Lovely Ads more absurd that anything I have seen on the screen. There was rarely a moment for the Ad when it was not racist, and a lot of us had shamlessly fallen into that fairness cream trap. They have been making Indians too attached to turning white and looking down upon the people with darker skins. There was even a version for men, and this should been discouraged a long time ago; but at least we don’t see much of this one, or may be I am not watching enough of the television.

ads (2)

5. The 5 Star Ads
I have to agree that this one began nicely, but then went on to become so repetitive and irritating that nobody really cared about any new advertisements. They actually end up making the chocolate feel like a certain kind of drug, or rather what makes people so stupid and unable to really use their brains in a proper way. It is very close to attaining the zombie status for those who eats them, which is possible with the next advertisements. They can surely think about making such advertisements.

4. The Boost Ads
The Boost Ads have finally succeeded in making sure that the Indian cricket team remained the champions – may be the heroes of our times stopped drinking Boost, and Dhoni never actually tried which is why Australia is the present champion. Boost is no longer the secret of anybody’s energy. Just by putting a number of cricketers in an advertisement, nothing gets better – this is just like a number of Ads with whom there can be a draw; there are too many celebrities and no sense about making a good advertisement. These let us know that some are people running short of ideas.

3. Airtel lovers Ads
The worst and the most irritating lovers were these who plagued our television sets for some time until getting extinct – may be they got divorced even before getting married, and it is only a fair thing. What the advertisement makes clear is that lovers can be really irritating and it is only fair not use the kind of mobile connection which these people use. It was just not working with its fake love content, and has no positive impact made in favour of getting new customers – it did have the ability to work reverse though, may be it brought more people to Vodafone, BSNL and others.

ads (3)

2. The Thums Up Ads
Yes, everyone wants to jump off a building or a cliff and Mountain Dew would say the same “thumbs up” and applaud after you fall on your head. This has never really made any sense at all since it started bothering us on the television. Don’t we all just want to have these bottled drinks rather than think about making a sincere attempt to kill ourselves? I would consider these advertisements more like inspiring suicide rather than anything else. People have to drink these when they are thirsty, not when they are adventurous.

1. Idea IIN Ads
With their worst advertisement being the one which says that everyone has to do engineering, and join something which starts with “II”, and proclaiming that Idea is the only hope that they have with the internet, this mobile network has gone and found a new low. It also teaches the audience that the girls who aren’t allowed to go to college can be and should be happy with just the best andriod phones with internet from Idea. These are only two of the problems of a series of pathetic advertisements. All advertisements which come from them fight hard to outsmart the other to be even more worse.

The Conclave Saga: Intro

When my post won a prize which was the pass to the India Today Conclave (https://theteacerebration.wordpress.com/2015/02/21/the-vision/), I wasn’t actually ready for this. Yes, I always knew that there was this prize for the contest, but was rather more interested in writing about that idea than thinking about the prize. It was the same reason why I posted that one which turned out to be the winning post – coming to Delhi wasn’t among my worries when I posted that on my blog at a time when I was bored and was looking to write on something.

There are not many of my readers who don’t know the Vampire Bat story, even as it started the same more on the other blog – Movies of the Soul. I wanted this idea of the Vampire Bat’s world to work, and this time, it did, and I am really happy about it. The Vampire Bat’s utopia was to be mine, and there was no other way through which I wanted to write the second post for the contest.

DSC08269

As I wasn’t ready, I couldn’t really reply to the winning mail fast enough. But then I thought, what was there to lose? Except for the money played for the flight tickets, stay and the food when not part of the Conclave – but there was no replacement for an experience. Then there is the element of time – I was preparing for the PSC exams and would miss the coaching for a few days, but it wasn’t something that couldn’t be brought back on track with some effort, but the Conclave was something that was a first opportunity for me.

Yes, Delhi is quite far away, and I was sure that I have to cover a lot of distance for this programme. I asked myself, why not? This is the first time I actually won a contest from a major blogging community (Thank you BlogAdda – http://www.blogadda.com). I didn’t need to miss out on this, as this was a special event and I had never visited Delhi. This was also a trip, and not just an attempt to claim a prize and see a few celebrities on the stage. This also had an intellectual side, and even though I had the ability to come up with many excuses, there was not the need for any, because I could just go.

It was not a good start for the journey. The flight was delayed and I was caught in the heavy traffic of Delhi later – that kind of traffic from which I had doubts about making it out alive even though it made me a lot more confident about driving around Cochin. The wait at the Mumbai Airport was worse, and the waiting procedure continued only to have me at the destination much later than expected, and I had to wake up early on the next day to get to the Conclave at the expected time.

DSC08348

It was my birthday when I started from my hometown, but it didn’t go the usual way. Half of it was spent at Cochin getting prepared for the journey, and the rest at Delhi and in the flight with a part at the Mumbai Airport. The day for the Conclave was to begin was waiting to arrive. It was cold and I felt like being frozen, coming right out the hot climate at Cochin. I haven’t been good friends with low temperature for quite a long time.

I reached Hotel Taj Palace at 7:45 AM next day though. I did feel that it was more than needed, as I thought that I was not going to make it on time after that birthday which had no celebration at all – yes, people who were not on my Facebook list completely forgot that I was born on that day. But it is quite natural, and I hoped, or at times knew that it could only get better later. After all, I had come all the way from Cochin to attend this one programme. The post about the experience of those days coming up 🙂 #Conclave15

Littering in the Moonlight

The vampires were having a tough discussion just outside the Dracula Castle, as the Vampire Bat, the Vampire Owl and the Vampire Snake were present with Uncle Dracula.

“No, not even in the moonlight, said Uncle Dracula. “You are not even supposed to litter in the sunlight, and then how can you litter in the awesome moonlight which is more precious to us vampires?” asked Dracula.

“But it was the Halloween moonlight with cool vampire people all around, and I was drunk. Really, really drunk” said the Vampire Snake.

“He is a snake with special venomous spit superpower. Even if he doesn’t throw waste around, how can you ask him not to spit?” asked the Vampire Owl.

“Because all of you have taken the pledge to keep the Dracula Castle and its premises clean. Being drunk is not an excuse. Nothing is an excuse” screamed Dracula.

“But the Mummy spat over that tree on the side of the road, and you don’t want to know what the local werewolves do. The ghosts of the living dead did something even worse” said the Vampire Snake.

lttr

“They do not belong to the vampire category, and won’t come under me. The Mummy is level three desert catgeory. They don’t even come inside the castle. Our current collaboration is with the zombies. Cleanliness begins at home. This is our vampire ancestral home. Do you understand the highly intellectual and vampirically superior words of unlimited wisdom which come out of my mouth?” yelled Dracula.

“Yes, listen to Uncle Dracula. If he raises his blood pressure too much at this age, we might have no uncle, and I might inherit this castle. I will end up being so rich and may be construct a tennis court on the front right corner and the statue of myself holding a tea cup on the left side” added the Vampire Bat.

“What? Wait, no. I am not raising my blood pressure. I am just asking this new vampire apprentice whom you brought from that local tea shop to behave and be a good citizen rather than being a Great Litterburg” said Dracula.

“But I promise not to litter again” said the Vampire Snake.

“See, he is a good vampire apprentice” added the Vampire Bat.

“Or I shall feed him to the snakes in the pond” threatened Dracula.

“But he is the Vampire Snake. What is the point in putting him with normal snakes?” asked the Vampire Owl.

“Oh, yes. I meant the crocodiles. Those little crocodiles that I have like the early villains of cinema. I will throw him to the crocodile pound and clap once, laughing loudly like an awesome villain. Damn, I am really getting old; my memory is failing me” Dracula made it clear.

“Thank you, great old vampire lord” said the Vampire Snake while taking a bow.

“See, this is why I bite people. Always use the trash can. Littering is bad. By doing such things, you are working against the environment as well as your nation. And for the sake of each and every living vampire, please don’t spit” advised Dracula.

ltr

“As if he doesn’t already have enough reasons” murmered the Vampire Owl.

“I have heard that he is going to act in a commerical against drinking and smoking, plus supporting care for stray dogs by making them join the werewolves. He is into social causes now” whispered the Vampire Bat.

“We were never the real villains, right?” asked the Vampire Owl.

“Why? No, never. We are not even remotely evil; just see these litterbugs and the rest of the minions of the real dark world. Uncle Dracula can’t even fly around in the invisible mode these days with people leople littering from their vehicles” added the Vampire Bat.

“We vampires realize this. When will the humans understand the same?” wondered the Vampire Owl.

It is written as a part of TOI’s “The Great Indian”, a humorous initiative for a better India; this time on “The Great Indian Litterbug” who considers littering as a birth right – the kind of people that we see almost everywhere in India. Life Gets a Lot Quicker

Having its inception in 2008, Quikr has been very useful in the lives of so many people, as I have heard about it from common men – even as I am yet to use their services directly. I have been interested in their advertisements and have thought that this would be a nice and very interesting option if I am ever to shift to another place, quite far away from my home. Such an option is never far away for me, as I haven’t really settled down in my life yet. The choices still seem to be kind of open for me.

There are many places where I would not mind relocating to – the list includes those cities which I have already visited – Kolkata, Calicut, Trivandrum, Chennai, Thanjavur, Kollam, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruchirappalli, Mangalore and Hyderabad. Among those options, there would also be Bangalore – yes, that is a more possible choice for relocating. There are so many of my relatives and friends there and I have been invited so many times to travel there. Yes, there are so many engineers there, and most of the people that I know, happens to be B.Tech or M.Tech with their qualification.

You can always move somewhere with these necessary things :D

You can always move with these necessary things, and buy the rest through Quikr 😀

This invitation procedure is something that has been going on for a very long time with no chance to reach an end. My choice have been to do PhD somewhere there, an idea which has been there for a long time. I have been transformed into an old man with a post graduation in English Language and Literature with these times of doing almost nothing of much use. Bangalore has been the first choice for many people I know, and it had to be in my list too.

So, the first idea would be to get a house for rent, and I have already found a nice and small house through the real estate category of Quikr, which seems to be a good option. I also see the part-time job which I can combine with that PhD if I can write and pass the test and interview with that luck which has evaded me in the offline life. Yes, that would be a perfect combination right there, if things work out nicely.

Then there is the need to get a Persian kitten and name her Simona (or even Agnieszka) which should be even easier with Quikr. A few beds and the rest of the furniture can be easily bought through the same place, along with a few electronic appliances, especially refrigerator and washing machine. The car needn’t be there, but there should be that scooter, which can once again be bought, as I see some nice offers already, right now at the website.

Even Simona the Kitty feels the need to buy a vehicle from Quikr :D

Even Simona the Kitty should feel the urgent need to buy a nice vehicle through Quikr 😉

I also see the services for repair, which I can use when needed – and the need will be there, no doubt. May be I will also buy an aquarium which I saw in the website if it is still there, along with those nice little lovebirds there. If things get better, there can be another mobile and laptop through Quikr, who knows? No need to get frantic; no need to wander around. Everything is here and the options are rather endless when you have a look. There will be a lot of small things to take to Bangalore from here too, that is for sure.
