Into the Soul of Nature

Less than twenty kilometres from the town of Thodupuzha lies Thommankuthu, the eco-tourism centre which has a number of waterfalls, including one very scenic fall which is a nice place for a photo-shoot. You have to walk some distance to reach this one, and the walking process, even though through uneven terrain, won’t be that difficult because the scenery is wonderful around. On your left, there will be elevation and on the right, there is the way down through rocks and water flowing through.

So, when Thommankuthu calls you, will you be there? :D

So, when Thommankuthu finally calls you aloud, will you be there? 😀

If you have watched the song “Kattum Mazhayum” from the 2012 movie Chattakkari featuring Shamna Kasim and Hemanth Menon, you will know that it was shot here; it is a beautiful song with the environment also well utilized – you can look for it on Youtube some time to enjoy the music as well as to see the place nicely shot. Getting to the waterfalls is rather easy. With Cochin Airport as the closest airport, the nearest railway stations should be Ernakulam, Kottayam, Aluva and Angamaly with Aluva being the best choice. I last traveled to the place about an year ago, and the roads were very good at that time.

A bridge on which you will drive your car. It is part of nature :D

A bridge on which you will drive your car. It is just a small part of nature 😀

About reaching Thommankuthu, coming from the North, you can go through Chalakudy, Angamaly and Perumbavoor to reach Muvattupuzha and then Thodupuzha; Perumbavoor route is to be taken when arriving from the Cochin Airport too. From the South, you can come through Palai getting to Thodupuzha from there or through Koothattukulam and Muvattpuzha. You can travel through Pattimattom or Kolenchery when coming from the city of Cochin. The accomodation is best at a town of your choice from those mentioned before. You can stop for food at any of the towns mentioned as there are some nice restaurants around.

The presence of a tree-house makes things special all the time.

The presence of a tree-house makes things special all the time; not just here.

But in the case of tea, if you need it, you can have some great tea from one of those shops around before entering the eco-tourism destination. You can have some tea and start the journey by taking some photos from the side of those shops as there is something like a nice viewpoint there. A visit in the morning will be better as there will be less rush. Thommankuthu is still a destination which has less crowd than those places with lesser potential manage to have. The evenings will have more people around.

Walking on the rocks, towards that final destination.

Walking on the rocks, towards that final destination which gets closer.

The journey from the last big town Thodupuzha to Thommankuthu will begin to get scenic very early if you look out through the windows of the vehicle. On the way, there will be places where you might wish to stop and take pictures. There is one particular bridge which you might really want to have a look at. There will be a lot of greenery around and this will surely make sure that your immortal desire for wandering away from modernity can get the early thumbs up.

Trees like this one brings a nice feeling of being close to nature's soul.

Trees like this one brings a nice feeling of being close to nature’s soul.

After you pass the gates, it the long, but interesting walk. The trees and the atmosphere makes sure that you won’t get tired that easily. The restrooms are there in the beginning, and there are also benches at some areas, even though you can sit on a rock or a giant root of a huge tree. It is after you go past the danger area that you should greet your temptation to get to the rocks and the water. You will still need to look for the slippery areas though. There is the necessity to look for the sign boards to make sure.

We go through places like this one, and we wonder why not be here forever?

We go through places like this one, and we wonder why not be here forever?

There will be tree-houses on the top of some trees which will provide nice viewpoints. Some trees will also inspire you to take some photos. After a certain point is reached, you will need a local guide to go further. The journey after that will be more difficult. In the case of a family trip or when you are beginning to get tired, stopping here will be appropriate. If you are in an adventurous mood and there is the need to see more waterfalls, caves and viewpoints, you can go ahead.

And then the waterfalls which proves to be nice background for everything!

And then the waterfalls which proves to be nice background for everything!

Removing the Wrong Scenes

Among the movies which have been running successfully this year, Ennu Ninte Moideen has a big place, and it might already be the highest grossing Malayalam movie of the year and was already the Malayalam movie with highest collection all-time after Drishyam, Premam and Bangalore Days when last checked a few days ago. It is a movie that claims its position by the quality of true love more than anything else. It is something that none of the newer movies could claim, and even so, it has been overrated by the fans as the greatest love movie of all times.

I recently came across two of the deleted scenes from the movie, which were uploaded on Youtube by the men behind the flick. Even though I liked this movie very much, I had my thoughts that some scenes which should have been there, had gone missing, making this movie incomplete at some parts. At some points, the movie was just rushed without having the connecting links. The character of Moideen surely deserved more moments, and with these two deleted scenes, we have two big ones!

The first scene has the character Kottatil Sethu (Bala) confronting Moideen (Prithviraj Sukumaran). This is a scene which has a very high impact in the rivalry between the two which develops after Moideen’s love for Kanchanamala (Parvathy Kottuvata). It has not just the intensity but the right display of the twist of events. There was the need for a big impact scene showing the change of things around and this is one such sequence which has been sadly removed from the movie.

Here, the football match has its announcement of players which begins and Sethu is nowhere to be found, only to appear later in the rival team. As he refuses to shake hands with Moideen, it shows his intention which is just to injure Moideen during the game, and Moideen plays along making sure that it doesn’t go on to become a fist fight and a possible communal riot later. The big brawl is nicely averted by Moideen with his intelligence, which is revealed in the end.

Prithviraj, Tovino and Bala has performed very nicely in these sequences. There are powerful feeling expressed around here, and you will love how Moideen reveals his intention towards not making a scene and inspiring a brawl or riot among his own people. The goodness of his mind and his smart ideas are on display here. One has to wonder why this wasn’t included in this movie. The fans would want the man to be a rowdy and beat everyone up and so they won’t want this intelligence sequences, but the thinking audience deserved this.

The second scene is even better and never deserved to be even though about to be deleted. It once again showed Moideen’s righteous state of mind because if he was murdered by the crowd, that would have caused a communal riot, even though the blind fans will want this removed hoping for the hero to beat up the whole crowd or stopped them with some punch dialogues. But here, Moideen chooses the right method, to retreat, something which every common man would have done.

The second scene also fills up some parts of story and Moideen’s character well. The fans wanted this character to be a rowdy or a murderer, which is why they would also want these scenes to be deleted. Those who thought that this was not quality enough will still love the “class” of Amar Akbar Anthony. There is also more of Sija Rose in this character rather than in the theatrical version. Someone with the ability to think will wonder why these scenes were deleted though! The only reason could be the total length of the movie, but for the same, there were other scenes which were better removed including the stage drama sequences.

A River: Through Camera

There has been a good number of songs which have featured Periyar going through the town of Aluva, the most popular ones having the name itself in the songs including “Aluva Puzhayude” in the recent blockbuster Premam and “Aayiram Padasarangal Kilungi” from the 1969 movie Nadhi. Here are a few shots of the very popular river which has flown through inside a good number of Malayalam movies. All these shots were taken by me on my Sony Cybershot DSC-W310 Camera.

Simona Times: Edition VI

***Just some fictional cat news centered on our most loved cat of all time, Simona.

Simona gets her first umbrella.
It is a known fact that none of the cats like to be in the rain, and Simona has been not much different from the others. The two immortal enemies of Simona has been lightning and thunder while rain has been her one true enemy whom she avoids at all costs. She knows that water has brought all kinds of evil animals who came to have a drink, and so she applied for an umbrella to at least save her from the water in the form of rain. Even during a flood, she plans to use it to float on water. Still, she has raised concerns about the strength of the same as she also intends to use it as a shield against stray dogs.

Jpeg

Simona discovers how to fly.
Even thought the common concept is that cats don’t fly, and some anti-cat people also say that cats should fly, Simona could discover the easy way to fly. She used a Lays packet to achieve the same. After this achievement, she has been called be many cat scientists to explain her first flight and how they could develop an advanced method to give the cats an advantage over the stray dogs. Most of the cats already feel the need to get the better of the crows how make faces at them. Simona has assured the other cats that flying cats will be a possibility in a few years.

The Cat Gang talks about big deeds.
The popular Cat Gang who is also called The One True Cat Gang of All Righteous Felines have declared that they have managed to bring twenty seven stray dogs to the dog shelter, and thus did a great service to the humans. The gang is known for their extreme dislike for dogs, and have often been heard talking about sending all the dogs to the deserted islands so that they can do some Robinson Crusoe there alone. Most of the popular cat groups have declared themselves not related to the Cat Gang in any manner. But recently, the Cat Gang has been claiming more service to the humans than ever.

The Demo-C(r)ats check polling booths.
As the voting progressed and ended, there was some news about cats wandering around the polling booths. This groups which call themselves to be Demo-C(r)ats have been exploring the human democracies to find and establish the best system for the cats. Even though there is a certain amount of voting among cats, there is nothing of true democracy, as declared by the members of the team. “We are rising in membership these days and soon we will have enough among us to make that impact which we have been waiting for; we shall unleash ourselves in a short time” the local leader was saying.

November to be declared Simona Month.
Even though it is not clear on which date she was born, Simona has made clear that it was sometime in November. She was found and saved from the canal on November twenty eight which is celebrated as the Great Simona Discovery Day which is declared a public holiday for the local cats. The one day anniversary is coming up this year, and special celebrations are planned in relation to it. The same is to be extended these days, and November will not have less working days for cats as it is the month of Simona, and it will bring a lot of joy to the Simona fans.

Simona decides to travel on two-wheelers.
Telling everyone that she support two-wheelrs for cheaper traffic and saving fuel, Simona has now chosen to travel only on electric scooters. This was part of her speech and campaign to save energy and environment. It was a reply to the last meeting of dogs which supported traveling with owners in cars. Simona has made it clear that cats are with the common man and also with saving petrol and diesel. “We want our humans not to go poor, right?” Simona was heard asking. “Who will take care of us if such things happen?” she further asked during an interview with the Cat People Channel.

Jpeg

The cat version of The Martian planned.
Simona has planned to bring a full-cat version of The Martian after being inspired by the story of survival. In a recent discussion in a television channel, she made it clear that it won’t be the same story or a direct copy, but an inspired remake which will touch the heart of the cat people. She has given the clue that it will be more based on the true story of a cat who escaped from a canal when surrounded by many stray dogs. Simona has made clear that it was not a fake story, but a real incident, and so it will appeal better to both cats and humans compared to The Martian.

We are all Special

We are all different individuals with a large variety of tastes. If we look closer, the similarities become a lot lesser in number and this lack of similarities will assure each one of us that we have our own personalities. There are lots of things that contribute to this individuality, but in my case, I am going to come up with some weird reasons. Different might be nice, but weird is better. It is also special! What is the fun in everyone being the same kind of person?

The first point here would be that I don’t comb my hair. Well, I can’t remember when was the last time I did that. Nowadays, I don’t even have hair style. All the style depends on how my hair manages to be. I have cared very less about how I look like; it has been one my least concerns. If you see me right out of the bed, my looks will be the exact same as how you see me on the road. The looks should be one thing on which people are never to be judged, and I hope I won’t be. Seventy rupees in every one and half months and the hair is done.

Then there is the point about tea. Most of you should already know it and this blog is also based on the same as you might have noticed the presence of tea already. My special skills include drinking a lot of tea; or rather it is my special need – I drink a lot of tea each and every day. It makes sure that I will write again and without tea, my life is empty. There might be other things among food and drinks, but nothing for me like a cup of tea. Even now, I had to find my tea for inspiration.

This is the kind of path which you follow. Also note my car for no reason :P

This is where I would park my car. There is tea all around, and so inspiration.

I have always loved the celebrities who were not crowd favourites. Even as a child, I tried to bring my own interests to light. Whether it was cricket, football or WWE, I used to come up with my own favourites who were not the biggest names at that time. I wanted my choices to be different and the kind of people whom everyone else loved. I guess that there was a certain amount of selfishness there as I also wanted to love these people without sharing with a huge crowd.

I try my best not to smile while taking a photo, or at times come up with half a smile. I have felt that there is no point in smiling in front of the camera when there is not much happiness in life and people hate other so much. As true happiness is rarely there and so difficult to find, I consider my smile to be fake and therefore will make an attempt to hide it whenever possible. True happiness is more of a fairy tale than true love, and I am not going to bring that one to light. If smiles are missing, I hope others smile for me too.

One thing different in my belief system is that I believe that we are all striving for one aim, which is death. I have good set of positive beliefs about death which I keep close to my heart. I used to have a few points printed about the same, but then decided not to keep that piece of paper because someone will think that I am suicidal. It is not like I am suicidal, but I wait for the moment of my end, and I started this waiting quite some time ago. Only death can bring the much needed equality.

So, let the dark clouds leave and get to the destination I am talking about.

So, let the dark clouds arrive and remind us about that dark end to our lives.

I am yet to really understand why I write blogs. I keep writing as if it is something which my life depends on. There has been no day without at least one blog post from last December onward. Sometimes I think that I know the reason, but most of the time, I feel that there was no real understanding about the same. Usually, people have an aim, they have ambitions and they know where they are going with their blogs. But with all my weirdness, I know nothing about it. Maybe I am a blog post robot who managed to gather a human soul.

2015: The New Faces

In the year 2015, there were a number of actresses who were more noticed with their new movies. The same were the case of a number of new actors getting better attention, but with those faces not that familiar with the audience, there were more new faces making an impact among the actresses than the actors. I can list a few names here on those actresses who have made us feel that they are here to stay in the Malayalam movie industry. I believe that you will also like them. Along with these actresses, you can also add Divya Pillai from Ayal Njanalla and Sana Althaf who was good in a bad movie, Mariyam Mukku.

Nikhila Vimal (Love 24×7)
There are not many movies which has deserved more attention like Love 24×7; it surely needed a better ending and direction, but still it was a nice feel-good watch which had Dileep and this new face in full form. The lady lead in this movie came as an extra boon here, as this movie is sure to get more attention with the DVD sales. Nikhila has a cute character in this movie, but that evolves very well with determination which changes the person as the movie gets towards the end. Two different styles and that nice attempt at Trivandrum slang makes her the big, sweet surprise!

Gayathri Suresh (Jamna Pyari)
With Kunchacko Boban and the debutante Gayathri Suresh in the main roles, Jamna Pyari made its entry into the Onam season; and it ended up as a hit at the box-office. The Miss Kerala 2014 and currently an employee in the South Indian Bank made her entry into this movie and had done a very good performance for a debutante actress as she nicely fits into the girl-next-door character and the Trichur accent does wonders for the cutest face around. Even though Jamna Pyari doesn’t have that much in it to provide its actresses with situations to do anything special, she manages to be noted.

Mareena Michael Kurisingal (Mumbai Taxi)
Mumbai Taxi is an interesting movie made with a cast and crew consisting of a lot of newcomers. The return of the child actor in Pappayude Swantham Appoose, Badusha was used as the selling point of the movie, but the central character and the one who makes the most impact in this movie is Mareena Michael Kurisingal who was there in a smaller role in Haram and is part of one of the funniest sequences in Amar Akbar Anthony. It was a serious role that she had in the thriller shot at Mumbai and she managed to do that very well; not much of smiles out there, but serious focus.

Parvathy Ratheesh (Madhura Naranga)
This is actually the debut which many people have been waiting for, and it was also a much talked about one in the news and entertainment channels. With the strength of the trio of Kunchacko Boban, Biju Menon and Neeraj Madhav with the first two having a long success story together, this debut was going to be nice, and the movie had a long run. She is the daughter of the popular actor of the eighties and ninetees Ratheesh who shined as hero, villain and supporting actor. Parvathy makes an interesting entry by playing a Sri Lankan Tamil girl who is in trouble in the United Arab Emirates.

Jewel Mary (Pathemari)
There were two sides for Jewel Mary this year, both with Mammootty; one was with the miserable Utopiyayile Rajavu and the other with the much acclaimed realistic drama, Pathemari. Even though the first one brought her to the big screen, the earlier shot movie was the latter one. Utopiyayile Rajavu has almost nothing in it with not much positive for her there, but Pathemari had her true debut as a great success. She played Mammootty’s wife, and she did well; it is a lot like how Meena has played Mohanlal’s wife in Drishyam and many other movies, looking like the one right pair.

The Three Heroines of Premam
Everyone knows how well Premam did not only in Kerala but also in other states and even abroad; it was that kind of a movie which came and brought the big surprise. The movie was not just about Nivin Pauly being the protagonist, but also about three women, played by Anupama Parameswaran, Sai Pallavi and Madonna Sebastian. Anupama was the cutest one around, playing the youngest character who studies in plus two; it was simple and she managed that well. Sai had the most interesting role which she played to perfection, while Madonna had the most pleasing side of the flick, and she made sure of that with her smiles!

A Return to Tennis

With the last Grand Slam of the year already over, I had thought that the best moments of tennis were over for this year. But it didn’t end with US Open, as ATP World Tour Finals was not the last big thing. There was Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza did managing to claim the doubles title at the WTA Finals with a 6-0, 6-3 win against the Spanish team of Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez Navarro. Having already won Wimbledon and the US Open, it has been an a very nice year for the Indo-Swiss team.

Sania was already the defending champion having won the title last year with Zimbabwe’s Cara Black who had her third title of WTA Finals doubles last year while Martina Hingis is having her third doubles to go with her two singles. It was quite an expected win there, with this team doing so good these days. But the surprises came in the WTA Finals singles and the Swiss Indoors at Basel. There were some interesting moments there, with ATP World Tour Finals still to come.

While Sania and Martina were on the top of their game, Agnieszka Radwańska wasn’t anywhere close to being declared to be among the favourites to win the singles division. She hasn’t been having that great a year, except for the Wimbledon. She still returned into the top five and claimed her spot, making the former World Number Two a fine contender especially in the absence of Serena Williams who was the three time defending champion absent due to injury.

radwanska!

Then too, the last year’s runner-up and the current number two who lead the seedings had to become the hot favourite, but Simona Halep had to take the early exit. Agnieszka herself had to qualify second from a group dominated by Maria Sharapova, even though she could take a set from Maria. Even in the semi-finals, she had to take on the second seed Garbiñe Muguruza who beat her in the Wimbledon. But she got through in three sets and also against Petro Kvitova the two-time Wimbledon winner who defeated Maria, once again in a nice contest.

It was nice to see the lady from Poland finally getting to the grand stage. She has been my long time favourite, even before the new ones were there, but I couldn’t see Agnieszka at her best winning those big ones until now. May be it is time to have newer names on the Grand Slams even though Serena will have other ideas. Agnieszka Radwańska and Simona Halep are two players who seriously need to win a Grand Slam or two in the next year; I wouldn’t be surprised if Garbiñe Muguruza does that too.

Then there was the biggest of them all, Swiss Indoors at Basel. It was going to have a big final after a long time; with Stanislas Wawrinka eliminated early thus getting rid of the possibilities of an all-Swiss clash, it came up to the two big names in the end, about two players who didn’t meet for a very long time because of one of them always exited when the other reached the final. The #Fedal final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal was long awaited, with the former surely having a better year and the latter having a better head-to-head record.

federer!

Federer still had a better record in indoor hardcourt matches and was also in a better form, even though Nadal did put up the fight. It was a match which was so close to arrive, but never really came for us. It has been twenty one months. It was finally great to see the two men with thirty one Grand Slams in total battling each other, and Federer won another title, and it is his seventh title at another venue, after achieving the same for Wimbledon, Halle, Dubai and Cincinnati. Lets hope to see more matches between these two, and with ATP World Tour Finals there to be taken for another seventh title, with Federer ranked much higher, may be these two will be in the same group!

Not Just Another Day

Nostalgia goes back by many years, but before reaching the beginning, there is another stage which can be directly related to the Malayalam movies. It is to this stage that one particular actor and his movies are related. The situation goes back to 1997 when his first movie was released, even though I watched the flick only later. His birthday was yesterday, and as usual, I realized that it was another birthday one day later. The actor in picture here is Kunchacko Boban, and it is about his movies that the rest of this post is going to be about.

Aniyathipraavu (1997): The biggest hit of the season and also of his career on his debut as a hero itself – it is something which every newcomer will dream about, and Kunchacko Boban did manage to achieve that. It also had some of the best songs of the century, and it was remade into the Tamil with the name Kadhalukku Mariyadhai and Priyadarshan used the same story for his Hindi movie, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna; it also had Telugu and Kannada remakes. It was also the first movie of Shalini as heroine, and the two established themselves as the new crowd favourite pair in the Malayalam movie industry. The movie was strong in emotions as well as comedy.
The great evergreen romantic song!

Mazhavillu (1999): This was not that much of a preferred movie at the time of its run as I remember people more concerned about this being a sad flick with tragedy awaiting to finish the story sending the audience into unexpected depression – the overall mood of the movie was so happy. This is also Preeti Jhangiani’s first movie and makes a really cute debut in this one. Kunchako Boban along with Vineeth in a rather negative role, this movie would have worked better if it had released later; the audience of the time just wasn’t ready. With some of the most melodious songs of its time, the movie is a lovely memory.
This song was the cutest one of the time!

Chandamama (1999) and Niram (1999): Chandamama was his first full comedy movie and with some good songs, it had enough to keep the laughter going throughout the flick as long as you don’t think much. But the grand movie was Niram, and it will remain my favourite movie from him, and this teamed him up with Shalini yet again. Remade in Telugu as Nuvve Kavali, in Tamil as Piriyadha Varam, in Kannada as Ninagagi and in Hindi as Tujhe Meri Kasam, the movie was a grand success. Once again, beautiful songs aided this one as the movie became a big boost to bring more of the campus based stories which followed.
A long time favourite song from Niram!

Doctor Love (2011): I wouldn’t like to remember any of his solo movies after this except for Kasthooriman, as it wasn’t a good stage in between. There were some nice movies in which he teamed up with others or played interesting roles in movies which were heroine-centered. Meanwhile, teaming up with other actors like Biju Menon had fine results as hit movies, and the trend followed after this movie too. Doctor Love was a nice return for him as the solo hero, as the man who solved the problems related to love in an arts college. The songs are good and the movie has the feel-good power.
And a lovely song from the romantic movie!

Chirakodinja Kinavukal (2015): There are not many spoof movies in Malayalam movie industry, and this one comes as a full spoof entertainer. Even though one might still think that this could have been an even better movie, this flick manages to bring enough here to catch our attention. The movie is successful in making fun of a good number of cliches in the movies, and Kunchacko Boban does a fantastic job as more than one character. It also successfully makes fun of some of the incidents which have happened related to the movie industry and that comes as a bonus – variety works here well.

Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi (2015): I do not consider this one as a grand movie which needs to be given the status of Avatar from Malayalam movie industry. But it is surely a nice try and it is a variety attempt which needs to be applauded. Kunchacko Boban plays Philipose John Varkey, a survivalist and nature enthusiast in this multi-starrer movie and is the leader of a gang which tries to save a village deep in a forest, as too many people from the world of modernity hopes to end these trees and destroy their world. There is beauty in the way the movie is taken, and it is best experienced in the theatres.

Wishing Kunchacko Boban a very happy birthday! 🙂
Leaving you with a song from his movie Visudhan.

Simona Times: Edition V

***Just some more fictional kitty news centered on our most loved cat of all time, Simona; as she wanders through the complicated world of humans.

Catmobile is birthright, says Simona.
After watching too many Batman movies, Simona has expressed more desire for the Catmobile which has been under the consideration of both the humans and the vampires for quite a long time. If a bat can have a mobile and it even has wheels an armour, why can’t a cat? – this has been her doubt for quite a long time. She once again made it clear that the cats are the true saviours and helpers of the humans and if they can’t have a mobile, it is a shame and something worth lamenting for a very long time. She has also shown the map of her new Catcave on the banks of the river Periyar.

Latest photo of cat-mouse love published.
During the last holiday special speech, Simona had earlier talked a lot about on-going tolerance between cats and mice. Nobody used to believe her, but this photo explains a lot about what she had said. Simona has always been the one cat of truth and justice, and with this photo of her resting with a mouse, she not only proves her greatness of soul and heart, but also shuts up the mouths of her critics. Cats and mice can co-exist, and Simona often finds her very close to this particular mouse. She has even made it clear that she is ready to share her food with her favourite mouse.

20151028_095704

Simona asks for social media representation.
With all the talks about other animals trending in the social media, Simona asks the humans, why not the cats? “There are dogs, cows, bulls, buffalloes; then why not us?” Simona was heard talking about the situation. “We are so cute that due to our presence even Death returned to the other world deciding not to take human lives. We are the reason why so many humans are still alive. We should be trending in Twitter and Facebook” she added. “The problem is that we never boast about what we do for humans, unlike those dogs; we consider what we do as our duty” another cat was heard saying.

Simona known to make secret travel plans.
The Cat Neighbourhood has found certain secret plans which are believed to belong to Simona. This was discovered at a time when all the cats were supposed to stay in the neighbourhood to battle the stray dog menace, and if possible even save those humans who provide food by directing the dogs to those houses which don’t feed the cats. Meanwhile, Simona was found to have watched the movie Rani Padmini, and had planned something special for her empowerment. What the Cat Neighbourhood had discovered was just a small part of a big plan, as it is believed.

Simona likes to move it and move it.
Simona was practicing certain dance steps. She has successfully made a lot of cats in the neighbourhood jealous and they came up with a notice towards the International Cat Committee to prohibit the same in the name of ancient cat culture. They have also come up with posters all around about how significant a role the cats played in Egypt, and this honour as well as dignity were lost to them because some strange cats are intentionally trying to bring shame by doing dancing and singing. The International Cat Committee has banned Simona from dancing “intentionally”, and now she dances while sleeping.

Selfie with Simona becomes the new trend.
Simona’s popularity has been on the increase, because of which there has been a new trend of taking selfies with her. Simona has been against selfies throughout her life-time, but she has decided to take part in the process because a lot of cats as well as humans have asked for the same. She has exited the anti-selfie group and unliked the anti-selfie page on Facebook to prepare for this. She has also accepted the invitation to the great selfie party next week which is to come after the Halloween party. Simona has also ordered for a special hat to pose for the special selfies.

Simona chooses to seek the truth.
The last few days had Simona and a small team of cats watching the politicians who had come to houses seeking votes. The cats have decided to make sure that none of the humans in the houses which feed the cats be made fools by false promises. A secure network of cats has been established for the same purpose, and with each visit by these politicians, the cats have decided to warn their favourite people with a special kind of meow. There are special squads for each ward of the muncipality, all of them reporting to the meeting to be held at a central point a few days before the day of voting.

A Blessed Birthday

Today is November 1st, the day after the Halloween night. I usually try to come up with a Halloween night post, but as horror always exists in my life a lot better than anything else, I thought that I should come up with the Kerala Piravi post instead. Today is the birthday of the state of Kerala or the Kerala Piravi Dinam. It is believed that Parashurama, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu created Kerala as he threw his axe into the sea, and water gave way to bring the land which is now this state, A part of his creation also forms a very small part of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Most of the Keralites do know all these, but I will share this for the first time on my blog. A reminder will only help to keep the memory filled.

Lord Parashurama, who is credited with bringing the land of Kerala out of the sea

I have read a good amount history, but all that I have studied has not got much about Kerala; still, I will bring something here. Kerala history also forms only a smaller part of our history books except for the times of the Renaissance, if I remember correctly from my school days. Three big kingdoms of Kerala on May 27th 1498 when Vasco Da Gama landed at Kappad included Travancore in the South with its capital at Padmanabhapuram which later shifted to Thiruvananthapuram, Cochin at the centre with its capital at Kochi and the Kingdom of Calicut based on Kozhikode.

Once the most powerful among the Malayalam speaking kingdoms in the South, Calicut made good progress into Valluvanad and through Cochin, forcing the ruler to shift the capital to Thiruvanchikkulam and then to Kochi itself. Calicut was controlling most part of Cochin soon and later they were making tributaries out of the smaller kingdoms. After coming under Vijayanagara Empire, the ruler of Calicut under the title of Zamorin or Samoothiri could rise again only to face the Portuguese threat, changing the alliances and friends teaming up with the Dutch against the men from Portugal and their earlier nemesis Cochin.

The Mysorean invasion of Kerala led by Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan began the end for Calicut with the ruler setting himself on fire as he faced certain defeat. Calicut would never really recover, and the kingdom would be part of Madras Presidency under British after the fall of Tipu. Once extending between Ponnani and Kochi, Cochin was restricted to a smaller state forcing it into alliance with Portuguese. The destruction of the city by the Zamorin of Calicut and Mysorean invasion would affect the kingdom, but would still rise to its best situation under Sakthan Thampuran, the most renowned king of the state.

Cochin also had its alliance with its former rival and the bigger Kingdom of Travancore in the South against Calicut. Covering most of central and southern Kerala along with the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, the rise of Travancore meant unity. The Battle of Colachel in 1741 had Travancore defeating the Dutch, becoming the first kingdom to win a battle against a European power. Led by the Flemish commander, Eustachius De Lannoy who surrendered in the battle, Travancore went on further North to conquer more. With the successful defence against a stronger army of Tipu in the Battle of the Nedumkotta and providing asylum to those who escaped the Mysorean onslaught, Travancore would rise to become the second most prosperous state in India with its kings of the people and a high level of religious tolerance.

Travancore and Cochin would later join forces again to come up with the Travancore Rebellion against the British East India Company. The later history of Kerala goes back to three provinces named Malabar, Cochin and Travancore; as the first one was under the Madras Presidency directly controlled by the Empire, the second and the third being kingdoms allied to the British. After independence, the first state to be formed was that of Travancore-Cochin, which was created on 1st of July 1949 by combining two kingdoms of Travancore and Cochin. Parur T. K. Narayana Pillai, the Prime Minister of Travancore, then became the Chief Minister of Travancore-Cochin with the ruler of Travancore as the governor.

This arrangment existed for a few years until the situation had to change with Travancore Tamil Nadu Congress launching a campaign for joining Tamil-speaking regions of Travancore-Cochin with Madras State. Later, according to the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, the current state of Kerala was formed as the Travancore-Cochin state combined with the Malabar district of Madras State and the Kasaragod taluk of South Canara district while Kanyakumari district was added to the Madras state. This is the fifty nineth birthday of the state which is known as the God’s Own Country, as that day of its current existence began on November 1st, 1956.

Happy birthday, Kerala 😀 There will always be only one true home and there is no other place like home 🙂
