Onam Special Movies

So, Onam is just a few days away, and as usual, we have a fine line-up of interesting Malayalam movies looking forward to make an impact at box-office during this festival season. There will be the big movies releasing and the older movies including Premam which released in May along with a few others will finally moving out of the theatres to make way for the newer ones. Only one of the Onam releases have already released and it has managed to come up with big collections at the box-office, with the rest all prepared to follow. There will be five Malayalam movies fighting each other for Onam, with four of them yet to arrive.

Loham: This was surely the most expected movie of the Onam season and also the first one to hit the theatres. It had a very big release and had created record with the initial day collections. Some theatres even have the same show at multiple screens. Even thought the opinions were not that positive about this one, I have found this one an interesting thriller with enough entertainment. Yes, there are problems of having too many characters and also having a certain amount of predictability and lack of originality. But Mohanlal once again saves the movie and rises above the whole thing as the legendary actor that he has always been. [Read the Review]

Utopiayile Rajavu: This Mammootty starrer is set for an August 27th release and the day is Thursday, a week after Loham release, and one day before the Thivuvonam. This is directed by Kamal who comes after five interesting movies in a row, and the last ones being Nadan and Celluloid. So, a lot will be expected od this combination. Jewel Mary, a popular television host is the leading actress in this movie. She will also be seen in Pathemari with the same actor, but it seems that this one will release first. Satirical comedy is a genre that we need a lot, and lets hope that this one will do justice to it, especially with cast from the television satire Marimayam being part of it.

Double Barrel: With the big star power which includes Prithviraj Sukumaran, Arya, Indrajith Sukumaran, Asif Ali and Sunny Wayne, Double Barrel comes to us on this Onam. Swathi Reddy, Rachana Narayanankutty, Isha Sharvani and Pearle Maaney are there as the main actresses. The movie is an action comedy thriller, and its trailer gives a feeling about which we can’t be sure – so it is either awesomeness or nothingness for this movie; there is not much chance of being between the two. But it is from Lijo Jose Pellissery, the man who made Amen, and so we can only expect the best right now. All his movies so far has had Indrajith, and this is no exception.

Jamnapyari: This one is a reflection of the season of celebrations itself, with the action shifting to Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala. With a full fun cast including Kunchako Boban, Aju Varghese, Joy Mathew, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Neeraj Madhav, this is sure to come up and evoke a lot of laughter in the theatres. You can guess that from the name and the trailer itself, and it was only yesterday that Kunchacko Boban made an appearance in Badai Bungalow and explained what the movie and its strange name is all about. Well, this might not be that big Onam movie, but it might be the one that will give the other movies with higher budgets some nice challenge. Remember Madhura Naranga.

Kunjramayanam: I had earlier thought that this will be the movie which will come out of nowhere to trouble every other, but it seems that this one has more promotion at the social media. Coming from Basil Joseph who was the assistant director to Vineeth Sreenivasan for Thira, this movie has Vineeth himself in the lead along with his brother Dhyan Sreenivasan who was also the lead in Thira. This is the first time and that the two brothers are acting together in a movie, and from what it seems, Vineeth is going the way of his father Sreenivasan who have always excelled in these kind of roles. There are also Aju Varghese and Neeraj Madhav here along with Badai Bungalow‘s Arya.

The other movie languages include The Man from U.N.C.L.E which has more chance of going unnoticed around here because this is Onam, and people are surely not looking for that kind of a movie – The pathetic Kingsman: The Secret Service had most of its shows cancelled around here, and so this movie can keep that in mind. Spy surely had better results, but this is still Onam which won’t have people looking for much of Hollywood! Saif Ali Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer Phantom will surely do better than the Hollywood flick, but people desiring to watch a Malayalam movie for Kerala’s own Onam will be more, and so the success here will be limited. Well, this being the holiday season will still bring the business!
